xilddx
This is my favourite, purely for its simplicity, sorry about the quality but it is a copy from a tape of a tape x 2 then converted to mp3. Was recorded for a single but never released in 1979(ish). https://soundcloud.c...ck/plastic-girl
I really like your going to the tonic at the end of the verse sections, it's got attitude. It's a nice line well played. You are mixed rather loud aren't you

It's got that urgency that seems to be a punky U2 type thing I associate with the era. I enjoyed it, thanks
xilddx
Here's one of mine. "Love Junkie" by SugarBox This is a fairly accurate picture of the sort of music and basslines I was composing back in the late 90s. It starts a bit dubby and ends up as a manic filtered "synth" sound. It was all done with my Overwater bass going through multiple MIDI controlled effects. It's even a mix of finger style and pick playing.
That's really good, I wish the production was a bit more lush sounding but hey. Really good tone and I like the propulsive and hypnotic line, it's perfect for the song. Great stuff!
xilddx
There's too much stuff to comment on all of it. A real variety and enjoyed quite a lot. Nige, that first Kit one i started listening to the bass but then got carried away by the song but what i remember was good! I remember the demon fiddler one, it was pretty intense.
Thanks man I am so so pleased that's what Kit's number did for you, that is the ultimate compliment, ace! I wish the production had been a bit more lush sounding too, but it was recorded on an 8-track portastudio in my lounge. The final mix isn't ideal, but it was the last decent one we got before the multitrack cassette completely wore out!

JellyKnees
My favourite bassline is generally the latest one I've written, but this is one of my favourites from my current band. https://soundcloud.c...agic-fingertips It was originally an intrumental piece that I wrote and recorded using Cubase VST back in 2005 and it's one of the very first things of mine that Jo cunningly grafted some vocals onto when we started working together a couple of year later. It started with the main bass riff and developed from there really...chords definitely came later with this one. Oh, and there are a few bass overdubs on it here and there (sometimes one bass just isn't enough!) It was played on my KGB headless and DI'd straight in. I think there's some compressor and a touch of reverb on it, but it's pretty clean otherwise. I just like the driving feel of it I guess, and the fact that it gives me some scope to throw some accents and whatnot in when I play it live. It's definitely never the same twice (and can be a bit hit or miss), but it's always fun to play. I'll try and have a listen to some of the other stuff folks have posted on here later... Benplaysbass
Heres one I did a couple of weeks ago. Its a pretty depressing song but just feels like a happy bouncy song. JellyKnees
Some nice stuff on here. I do not hugely enjoy listening to myself because I annoy myself when I hear my personal cliches etc but sometimes it comes together https://soundcloud.c...s/12-nos-da-mam The first was recorded in a local studio where my DB sounds better than anywhere due to the lovely ATC monster monitors they have and the fine Neumann they put on the bass. One day I will own a pair of ATCs for my house. What was gratifying was that I managed to control my urge to play more than I needed to and just rumbled along at the bottom. It is self-control which is sadly lacking in much of what I do What usually happens is that I get comfortable playing what I had intended and look for ways to spice it up. Sadly I do not have the Pino "taste gene" so inveriably have to apologise 30 seconds into playback, turn on my heel and go in to do it again https://soundcloud.c...-evans/sunshine This was done at home and the structure of the bass line ebbs and flows nicely. Nothing is more important than structure of a line for me, if I had the chops to play fast weaving complex chromaticisms around a vocal I would use them at all times obv, but if the line did not breath with the song I would just get angry with myself. This was one of those lines which you chuck down, feel that it is going well but get more and more nervous as the song progresses incase you mess up. You get to the end with the feeling of "phew, I might actually get away with that!"
Hey Owen, I really enjoyed both of these... really nicely playing, great dynamics and subtlety of touch, the bass really breathes. Love the material too, gorgeous sound, really well recorded and mixed. All round excellent stuff dude.

ShergoldSnickers
Just loving the simplicity and honesty of the two double bass recordings that Owen has posted here. The music is allowed to speak for itself, and the playing is more than strong enough to stand on it's own two feet without much in the way of audio manipulation. Lovely, lovely sound. achknalligewelt
The latest thing I've been doing has produced an albumsworth of songs with Woodman Stone, a sample (my favourite) is here. It's me on guitar, too (bragging, but I was very pleased with it). It's so nice to hear Basschatters playing. Literally from the first items on this thread, I've loved it, even stuff in genres I wouldn't normally listen to.

The bass seems to be mixed pretty quiet so although I heard some really nice phrasing and little runs, I would have liked it to be a bit more present in the mix. Great though!
I like this aswell, it shares many of the qualities of achknalligewelt's song (above). And again, some really nice manic phrasing I like it there's a tangible level of excitement where timing seems less important than the vibe, a bit like Alex Lifeson guitar solos, he gets a bit out of shape and almost on the edge of losing it, I find that very exciting to listen to. You do a fast little run in the middle of the neck in the first half of the song, it has that manic quality to it. Nice!

xilddx
Something I'm getting from this thread is that not a lot of us are making creative use of space. It's like any space that's there is a decision to take away notes. Most of the time I tend to approach writing lines as adding notes to space, rather than adding space to notes. If that makes sense. Am I in the minority?

iamtheelvy
My favourite was a song called 'Little Piece of Chicken' from years ago. It's by no means the best line that i've ever come up with, but it had a certain bounce that I've always liked. Plus the solos were epic: http://youtu.be/PX76GKo6EtY
