Truckstop Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) Hello all, Need something more suitable for heavy gigging use so looking to swap this for a Jap or Mex P or J. Also happy to look at VM/CV Squier P, J or Tele basses with some cash my way. 4-bangers only please. Not bothered about colour combos, but I prefer traditional colour schemes; red, black, SB etc. Anyway, more on the Musicmaster; I've had this for a while but never got round to sorting it out. It needed a jolly good tidy up and a new pup. I took it apart, cleaned it and polished it and looks great. The neck was covered in grime; some polish, elbow grease and lemon oil made short work of that and now looks and feels great! The tuners are a little stiff, but work fine and are all original. All the hardware and pickguard are orginal. All that has been replaced are the electronics which didn't work (the original pup and wiring will be included in the sale). There will also be a Kent Armstrong hot-rail included and there is a Fender Strat pup installed at the moment; I prefer it to the Kent Armstrong. The wiring is a Ki0gon P wiring loom. Ive not been able to source any replacement knobs. The originals will be included in the sale also. I decided that new 1/4" knurled chrome knobs would look out of place on this and I've been holding out for some black plastic knobs but haven't found any yet . I would say overall condition is about 6/10. Lots of bangs, scrapes, chips, wear and crazing but is all in one piece, structurally sound and all original. Bridge and tuners show patination and some of the pickguard screw holes could do with filling. It's got a weird sound. Plenty of bass, but not too articulate. Sounds very punchy with bags of attitude, but definitely not suitable for a clean, hi-fi type sound. Rock and punk bassists love these and I can see why; perfect for chugging away with! I'm looking for £375 cash (paypal or bank transfer) or a trade deal to the same value. I have a little money to add on for a suitable trade, but not much! I live in St. Albans and collection is preferred but delivery is possible at buyers cost. If you live near enough, I'll deliver for you! Alex Edited February 16, 2013 by Truckstop
Guest Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) This is guitar pickup? Edited February 16, 2013 by Guest
Truckstop Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) Yes, Musicmasters were designed to utilise Strat pups when they first came out in the 70's. The Musicmaster was an entry level bass and as such Fender didn't waste time, money or resources on developing a bass specific pup for the job. Hence, guitar pups being the norm for Musicmasters. I think Wizard designed a bass specific pup and wiring loom for use in Musicmasters and Broncos but most people seem happy to use guitar pups. 'Hot Rail' style pups seem to be preferred by most people as a direct replacement because obviously the problem with guitar pups is that they have 6 pole pieces that don't line up with the strings; a blade-style pup solves that problem. I decided to keep the Strat style pup in because I think it sounds better. A Kent Armstrong Hot Rail pup will be included in the sale so you can have a go yourself! Alex Edit: should also mention that I have the original pup cover included with this bass also. I prefer the visible pole look! Edited February 16, 2013 by Truckstop
ash Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Nice bass what's the line at the front of the body and also what's the intonation like?
Truckstop Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 The line appears to be there purely for aesthetic reasons. I assume it's supposed to be a grounding strip (obviously the usual way to ground is by soldering a wire from the bridge to the electrics cavity). It appears to just be some adhesive copper tape and it's not soldered to the pickguard or anything. I think it looks quite cool so I've left it there! Intonation is close but not quite spot on. I haven't actually done a proper set-up on it yet. It's wearing a brand new set of Rotosound 88's so I was gonna let them settle in for a couple of weeks before setting up. I've decided to sell it before setting up myself. I'm confident that it'll set up well and the truss rod works both ways as I tweaked it a little when I put the new strings on. Cheers Alex
Truckstop Posted February 18, 2013 Author Posted February 18, 2013 Bump. Have completed a set-up and intonation is set perfectly! I have loads more pictures too so if you want some specific angles or pictures showing the neck pocket/serial/pickguard serial etc then please let me know. Offers and trades welcome! Alex
