artisan
i am very tempted to buy a set of these but have never played guts before hence why i am asking you guys. I play only 50's style slap (or at least try) and want the authentic sound without spending a fortune. I currently use super silvers but although they play nice have a "middy" kind of sound to them. I tried the superior deluxe wackers too but soon fell out with the very uneven tension and found intonation difficult with them too. I am pretty cerain i will like the guts and Bob Gollihur rates the Lenzers too. If i get some i am thinking wrapped E and plain gut A D and G,id this a good idea or should i get wrapped A too. I saw a top rockabilly band "The Houndogs" on friday night, the bass player is the best slap player i have seen,he used wrapped E and A & gets an awesome sound. Also i guess they will be difficult to fit too and i'm not good a tying knots or filing the woodwork of my bridge either. Should i go for it ? keeponehandloose
go for it. I started out with a set if Clef guts from Upton and only have the E left now . All have been replaced with Lenzners and theres no difference at all. The Global Guts from India are a lot quieter than the Lenzner or Clef so dont mix and match those. zero9
I have a feeling that the bassist in the Houndogs uses Rotosounds RS4000's, which are steel wrapped nylon E&A and plain nylon D&G. I've used them in the past and they are great for slap.
artisan
Aha thanks for the info zero9 much appreciated. Would these be a better bet for me do you think ? Cheers

artisan
Thanks again to you zero9 i have been reading up on the RS4000's over lunch and actually ordered a set from Amazon. After reading up on the guts i think they are just too much faffing about for me,after all i am fat & lazy. Fingers crossed i will like them,i'm sure they will be nicer to slap than the super silvers & hopefully have a nicer clck too. Cheers again

A friend of mine has a bass strung with the rotos they're good strings.
symcbass
I've played most of the popular strings for slap over the last 25 (GULP) years. Rotos are ok on one of my basses, not on the other. I find them a bit twangy and don't like the feel of the E & A. For slap, a good mix is Innovation silver/golden slap E & A with Gut G & D. The superior Tricore E & A are also nice. They sound very like a wrapped gut string to my ears. Lenzners are nice too. The best playability/sound I've found is Oliv E & A with plain guts on top, especially for slap, but the Olivs are really expensive.
