xilddx
Headed for starters.
2-a-side or 4-in-a-row?
risingson
It's a ridiculous quote really isn't it. I feel sure he doesn't stand by it. It's complete bullshit.
+1, silly, probably said to make an impression but it isn't true. Still though, much as I like 5 strings, it would be a 4 string for me also!

chaypup
4 Strings and 2-a-side.
Lfalex v1.1
I don't care how many strings it has. Somewhere between 3 and 7 would be better for me. And frets. Somewhere between 20 and 36 (excluding any zero fret) will be OK.
Grangur
4's good for me. But I want a Warwick Just-a-nut to get the spacing right.
Dad3353
Good afternoon, all... It's already been done, and the result was pretty impressive... http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/gallery/bass/bas78.html ...I have the guitar version, but would definitely play one of these. Black Coffee
Can we go with four but agree we need the fiver model as an option?
Green Alsatian
I'll also vote for four strings.
Matt P
4 or 5 strings doesn't really bother me either way! having different models would seem like a good idea to me, there are enough people on here that 4/5/6 versions would be popular. is there any intention to actually have these made? a limited edition run by one of the better far east manufacturers would be fun, if the price was low enough i'd find a way to stump up for one (and smuggle it into my house!) i'm waiting for the pickup debate to start raging so i can suggest some kind of swappable/ moveable pickup design, maybe with a tool-free swappable preamp/control system. John Cellario
4 string was good enough for Jaco..if it was good enough for him etc etc..... And regarding p/ups...I want ones with individual height adjusting magnets so I can get an even balance acroos the neck. JamesBass
4 Strings, nice and simple that way, plus we can always add later perhaps!
Happy Jack
I think it should have four strings for some songs but five for others, so we need a Low B that can sink into the fingerboard and lie flush when not needed. In similar vein, and pre-empting the fretted -v- fretless discussion, it needs to be both of course. That clever design which used to get posted every few months, the one where the frets can sink into the fingerboard and lie flush when not needed, would be ideal. As to pickups, it needs both one and two. So what we need is a pickup design which can sink into the fingerboard ... oh no ... wait ... Grangur
Hey! I've just found a learned bass player who can advise us: www.youtube....h?v=4h1jQC1Ab2c Listen and learn at 0.12... forget the rest after this See... it's THAT basic! jonunders
I prefer 5 strings but if the committee decides on 4 so be it. In a democratic society we can always riot outside Dom's house. Go on strike or just plain sulk.
cocco
4 please. You only need 4, worse case scenario you buy 2 of our bass and tune them differently
mckendrick
Design by committee usually only ever makes progress on the basis of consensus. On Basschat that means you could be here for years.
I was thinking more on the lines of 'decades'.
Dom in Dorset
In order that some day we might actually complete this project I'm going to approach it in this way: Unless an outrageous string number is most popular , well offer a four and five string version, the majority bass will be the one that I cost up. The same will apply to the fretted /fretless option. all of this can be reviewed in the light of future developments.

mep
Basically speaking, I don't play basses with 5 strings, so 4 it is. +1 for Guy Pratt. Let's not bother with those, they're silly
