toneknob
...as voted for by the Music Radar readership: http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/the-60-greatest-bassists-of-all-time-279007/1 ...with a slightly surprising Number One. Another day another poll. The interesting stuff in these things is who makes the lower rankings.
kendall
No mention of Alex Webster......strange. Pleased to see John Taylor in there - but number one?
Fozza
No John Deacon either from what I could see.
woodyratm
That was quite shocking - No Alex Webster and no Tim Commerford? I think thats the first bass poll i've seen to not have John Entwhistle, Flea, JPJ or Geddy on the top spot!
Jellyfish
Well a poll is a poll! A shame not to see Mr. Bryan Beller on there, but happy that 3 of my favourite (15-17) are all up there next to each other.
OliverBlackman
Shall we presume the author was just a tad biased towards rock music?
mckendrick
No John Deacon either from what I could see.
But it's not real, is it? It's only a list of a certain number of participants' favourites, it's not a technical analyisis. I mean.... Jah Wobble above Berry Oakley...????? Oh, please.... I don't pay the remotest heed to these pathetic things. As far as I'm concerned I'm the best bass player ever, but for some crazy reason I don't make the list. Lynottfan
Good to see JJ, Phil Lynott and 'Arry in there, no Bruce Thomas, or no........ the list goes on and rather sums up why these polls of top players are basically rubbish, The OX not No1 recount Cheers for sharing and some of it was good for laugh. leschirons
That appears to be a poll of the 60 most well known bassplayers
EssentialTension
That appears to be a poll of the 60 most well known bassplayers
... and I still didn't know quite a few of them. Lord Sausage
HA ha ha! Man those types of list are dumb and pointless, but that has to be one of the dumbest!
xilddx
Top 60 of what? Most heard of?
EssentialTension
Most heard of?
Not by me.
wombatboter
Still glad to read "Everyone in this top 60 is a gifted musician, but Paul McCartney changed the world" (I'll get me coat)
gjones
Eeeeeeeeek! John Taylor...
wombatboter
I wouldn't put him on No 1 either but I have to admit that the bassline on "Save a prayer" is fantastic...every now and then he added some real cool licks in the Duran-songs (that cool slap in "Hungry like the Wolf", the bass in "Rio", etc..). Happy Jack
Why 60? Top Ten ... fine. Top Twenty ... contrived, but fine. Top Fifty ... essentially pointless. Top Sixty ... WTF?
BigLicks67
It was done in association with Orange amps, which may be explains why 59 of the 60 are bass guitarists, but no Ron Carter, Paul Chambers or Dave Holland. Even Danny Thompson gets overlooked. 'Rio' was one of the first things I learned on bass, at the time the story was the whole album was played by session musicians, so I suppose top spot is sweet for JohnTaylor. Dood
Maybe bass chat should put together the top 50 bass players poll!
paul_5
Seriously, Simon Gallup in the top 5? Above Jamerson et al. I declare shenanigans on this poll. It's good for a giggle I suppose.
flyfisher
Top 60 of what? Most heard of?
That was my first thought too. I guess if we define most polls as "top bassist who happens to play on my favourite song or in my favourite band" then it makes more sense. Still, in the subjective world of music, who's to say that's not a reasonable definition for 'top bassist' anyway?
thisnameistaken
At least Kim Deal is above Jeff Berlin.
jezzaboy
Gene Simmons ahead of Leland Sklar???? I don`t believe it!!!
jezzaboy
In fact, Gene above anyone??? Even me??? I though Adan Clayton would be in the top 10........... Runs for cover Edited February 28, 2013 by jezzaboy
ZenBasses
For me the 2 that are missing are Tony Levin - yes it's all about chapmanstick with him. But he can lay down some of the best bass lines. Adam Nitti - I'd put him at #1 if I could. Technique and musicianship don't come finer. Often overlooked
