...with a slightly surprising Number One.

Another day another poll. The interesting stuff in these things is who makes the lower rankings.

That was quite shocking - No Alex Webster and no Tim Commerford?

I think thats the first bass poll i've seen to not have John Entwhistle, Flea, JPJ or Geddy on the top spot!

No John Deacon either from what I could see.

But it's not real, is it? It's only a list of a certain number of participants' favourites, it's not a technical analyisis. I mean.... Jah Wobble above Berry Oakley...????? Oh, please....

I don't pay the remotest heed to these pathetic things. As far as I'm concerned I'm the best bass player ever, but for some crazy reason I don't make the list.

Good to see JJ, Phil Lynott and 'Arry in there, no Bruce Thomas, or no........ the list goes on and rather sums up why these polls of top players are basically rubbish, The OX not No1 recount  Cheers for sharing and some of it was good for laugh.

I wouldn't put him on No 1 either but I have to admit that the bassline on "Save a prayer" is fantastic...every now and then he added some real cool licks in the Duran-songs (that cool slap in "Hungry like the Wolf", the bass in "Rio", etc..).

It was done in association with Orange amps, which may be explains why 59 of the 60 are bass guitarists, but no Ron Carter, Paul Chambers or Dave Holland. Even Danny Thompson gets overlooked.
'Rio' was one of the first things I learned on bass, at the time the story was the whole album was played by session musicians, so I suppose top spot is sweet for JohnTaylor.

Top 60 of what?

Most heard of?

That was my first thought too. I guess if we define most polls as "top bassist who happens to play on my favourite song or in my favourite band" then it makes more sense.

Still, in the subjective world of music, who's to say that's not a reasonable definition for 'top bassist' anyway?

In fact, Gene above anyone??? Even me??? :D

I though Adan Clayton would be in the top 10...........

Runs for cover

For me the 2 that are missing are

Tony Levin - yes it's all about chapmanstick with him. But he can lay down some of the best bass lines.

Adam Nitti - I'd put him at #1 if I could. Technique and musicianship don't come finer. Often overlooked
