basstheface Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Hi Just wanted to share this pic of my Pangborn Warrior bass as they are quite rare nowadays. I've owned this since the mid 80s and it was my main bass for several years. It has a mahogony body with maple strip inserts, a through neck, the fingerboard is ebony and 34" scale, Schaller tuning pegs and a Badass bridge. It has tons of depth, clarity and sustain. The neck is quite slim, similar to a Fender Jazz at the nut. It has an active/passive switch and volume, bass, mid and treble controls. You can switch between neck, bridge pick ups or both on together. It's a delight to play. Ashley Pangborn basses were popular in the 80s. I believe Mark King used them for a while back then among others. Ashley seems to have disappeared off the scene many years ago which is a shame because he made beautiful basses. Hope you like it! Cheers Quote
ped Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Lovely looking bass. Doesn't MK have one in the 'Sun Goes Down' video? I love the headstock, too. Cheers ped Quote
Conan Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Very pretty! I always liked the look of these - kind of like a blend of JayDee and Alembic... Quote
mingsta Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Funnily enough I saw one of these at the shop last week while visiting my local luthier. I though it was an alembic at first. Quote

I went in a guitar shop one rainy afternoon and they had one exactly the same colour as this but with an omega cutout body shape and a graphite neck . The only reason I didn't buy it was because it neck - dived on a strap . I seem to remember Ashley Pangbourne packed it in and went to live in Germany . Quote
marcus bell Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Absolutely wish I could get my hands on a pangborn! Quote
Dingus Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 I bet if Ashley Pangbourne started making basses again there are still plenty of people who would buy them . Quote

marcus bell Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Maybe I'm wrong but I'm sure I read somewhere that the graphite necks were cheaper to buy new? Quote

ped Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Yeah I bet. Just trying to find some pictures. Quote
sprocketflup Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Whoever did your plastering seriously ripped you off :/ Nice bass tho Quote

jimbaby Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 My mate, who was born in UK but has played and made his life in Germany for many years, told me he had made a violin body from a solid piece of wood and met Mr Pangborn who made a beautiful neck for it, this was some years ago and he also told me that Ashley unfortunately suffered ill health soon after and he lost track of him. basstheface Posted February 28, 2013 Author Posted February 28, 2013 Hey GeeCee - thanks for putting me right on those details. sprocketflup - I'll get onto my builder straight away! Thanks for all the comments everyone. Quote
White Cloud Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Beautiful bass, I remember these well during the 80's. Is it true that Ashley started out building basses in his garden shed, or am I confusing this with another maker? Quote
dmccombe7 Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 i remember the adverts and thinking they were fantastic looking basses but i decided to go for a WAL instead mainly because i had heard of them at the time and they had a great rep. That's a gorgeous looking bass you have tho. Dave Quote
Jazziebasss Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Yeah these are great basses, I have one, it's a Warlord. I had the pleasure meeting Ashley at his workshop in Dulwich in the mid 80's. Mine is a Walnut body with African Paduk facing, five piece neck with an ebony fingerboard. It still sounds brilliant! Quote
TheGreek Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I've only ever seen one Pangborn which belongs to Nick Smith (Doctor of the Bass) - he, like many current owners, refuses to even discuss selling it. Quote
hen barn Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Well he did as it's now with Lou short. Was mine one the 80s then I sold it to Nick. Lou brought it down last year. Lovely bass Quote

Check out the instrument crime at the end of the vid. Did he use these before his JayDees? They've similar body shapes. Quote

rungles Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 (edited) OK so I checked with MK and he doesn't have his Pangborn anymore. His actual words were 'long gone mate'. I wonder where it is now, assuming it isn't still in the sand? Edited December 10, 2014 by rungles Quote
