Coilte Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 I was recently playing this LP (it was never released on CD, and there are no songs from it on You Tube) and admiring the great all round playing on it, not least from the bassist. I have always loved this album and give it an airing from time to time. It is dated 1970 and AFAIK was a one off studio session. Neither the pianist, drummer or bassist were credited, which I think is a shame, as IMO they make the album what it is. I was wondering (I know it's a long shot ) does anyone have an idea who the bassist was/is on the session ? While the basic structure of the music is obviously blues, this bassist really puts his mark on the music and is very well up in the mix. I'm curious as to who he was. Details about the band/album are sketchy, but the links below might jog someone's memory. Len_derby Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Very interesting. I don't know, but maybe emailing Paul Jones via his BBC page will get results. If he doesn't know it might spark his curiosity. Quote
Coilte Posted February 27, 2013 Author Posted February 27, 2013 Thanks for your reply Len. I'll try that. Posted over on TB also, but no joy there. It is no big deal if I don't find out. Just thought it would be nice to find out what bassist I have being listening to for the last forty three years......and who the rest of the band were too. Quote
BetaFunk Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 (edited) I vaguely remember that LP and it's probably one of those albums that you're never going to get to the bottom of on who played what. I've just looked at the LP credits on the net. It was produced by Bob Thiele and arranged by legendary soul arranger Gene Page. It features a young Tom Scott a couple of years after his time with the Don Ellis Orchestra and before L.A. Express. Guitarist David Bennett Cohen (Blues Project etc) who also played keyboards with many groups and on many recording sessions around this time so maybe he played keyboard on this. Can't help you with the bass player though. Edited February 28, 2013 by BetaFunk Quote
BetaFunk Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 (edited) I've just noticed that Arthur Adams plays Guitar on the LP and one track was composed by Joe Sample of The Crusaders. Wilton Felder the Saxophonist with The Crusaders (and Motown house Bass player) also played the Bass on recording sessions and played Bass with Arthur Adams around this time. I wonder.....????? Coilte Posted February 28, 2013 Author Posted February 28, 2013 (edited) Thanks for your input guys. Some food for thought there. I probably will never get to the bottom of who the mystery bassist was/is on the album, but I'm going to give it my best shot. BetaFunk, you could be right about David Bennett Cohen playing keyboards and Wilton Felder on bass. Another possible canditate for the bass chair is Max Bennett who played on a lot of Tom Scott albums in the early days. EDIT : I have just had a quick listen to BetaFunk's cilp above. The tone and style certainly sounds like the bass on the album. Edited February 28, 2013 by Coilte Quote

Well.....an update after many years..... Turns out I was wrong on the top assumption, and guessed correctly in the second. 😎 It was indeed Max Bennett on bass....and Joe Sample on keyboards. So what...? I hear you say. Yes, you are probably right, but I am happy to finally have found out. Edited Saturday at 15:32 by Coilte 4 Quote

I think it is down to the details of the album being updated on the Internet. I kept an eye on this from time to time. There is also now some clips on Youtube of the RBB. I could be wrong, but I have not seen much mention of the late great (died in 2018) Max Bennett here on Basschat. His career spans seventy decades and he (like Carol Kaye) played on everything from a needle to an anchor. Edited Sunday at 10:59 by Coilte Quote
