achknalligewelt Posted March 7, 2013 Share Posted March 7, 2013 It's a very wide range of song types - if your vocalist can handle all of them, she's a real find. The thing I've felt working with a varied setlist in this kind of band is that you shouldn't try to hard to mimic the sounds of the bands you're covering. We spent a while like that, but in the end just kept the famous bits, created the rest ourselves and went down so much the better for having a distinct 'sound' that we could really sell. vsmith1 Posted March 7, 2013 Share Posted March 7, 2013 My main band have female vocal lead and female keyboard/BV/harmony. We do a lot of these songs. The Elbow song just is such an anthem and everybody joins in. I'd recommend some Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, and just make sure that the keys are alright. [/quote] yes - LOADS of covers bands. The one I was in folded 4 days ago and I don't want to join another bloke-band doing the same old pub-rock stuff. My aim with the funk/soul setlist was to come up with foot-tapping accesible songs that, even if people didn't know them, would nevertheless get people boogying. Steam by Laura Vane is a good example. Trying to do something just that little bit different. As most people have said, finding a female singer who could sing that lot is going to be a real problem. It won't do much for the bearded rock pub types who won't know most of it - neither will it please a more indie venue. But you know your venues better than I and if you think it'll fit there - or are prepared to hunt down venues where it will - go for it. [*]Entertain yourselves. [/list] If you can't do the former, you may as well pack up and go home, and if you can't do the latter, you will soon jack it in ( unless you are getting paid a lot of money for doing it ) You should probably apply that test to each song on your list. I suspect there are one or two on there which you are playing for your own entertainment, and you should remember that your taste in music is probably affected by the fact that you are musicians, and unless you are playing to an audience of other musicians ( which doesn't happen very often, but it's nice when it does ) some of those might be a bit obscure. Of course, you may see it as your mission to introduce your audience to stuff they won't know, but you should do that sparingly and with some discretion on the night. Last year we learned Pelican by the Maccabees, which we all loved as a song, and is huge fun to play, but the couple of times we've tried it in public it's been a real floor-clearer. Lesson learned. You could probably get away with one or two that don't fit criteria 1, and you should maybe consider 1 or 2 that don't fit criteria 2 but would be popular with the punters ( Mustang Sally ? :-) ) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
