citymariner Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Hey all, I'm dabbling more and more in sorting my guitars (and friends) guitars out. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any packs/ sets from retailers that is a basic setup kit for basic Luthier type stuff. I've a possible bass defret and having read up on the process I would certainly beenfit from buying some extra tools. Is there a basic tool kit out there that you know of? TIA, CM Quote
KiOgon Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Probably the best collection of specialised tools you'll find :- http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools.html Hope you've got deep pockets Quote
citymariner Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 Thanks - what a website - if I was ever to walk into that as an actual shop I would need to remortgage the house. At least I'd have the tools to make a tiny replacement! Shame it is in the US. I don't mind paying for quality tools - some you can get as high quality (but cheaply) as it seems if you put 'Luthier' in front of tool it means you can double the price! Quote
BassBus Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 There's the British equivalent Allparts UK Quote
Pete1967 Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 (edited) Stewmac is comprehensive, but... eech... so expensive. Import duty (over $130) and VAT to boot. I worked out what i needed then bought almost all of it off ebay, one tool at a time to spread the cost (and limit the duty fees), but also have a look at: http://www.philadelp.../luthier-tools/ http://www.tonetechl...supplies.co.uk/ http://www.lmii.com/ Forgot to add LMII Edited March 7, 2013 by Pete1967 Quote
BigRedX Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Also have a look at Crimson Guitars. It's mainly fret levelling and dressing files at the moment, but there are more planned. There's also some great videos on how to use them on the site. Quote
Badass Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Some great sites for parts and tools. Thanks for the heads up. Quote
Walker Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 (edited) I made my own fret pullers, bought some very cheap end cutters and ground them down to get the sharp edge needed. Took about 20 mins to defret the neck. I bought a feeler gauge and a small steel rule from amazon and some neck radius gauges from ebay. As long as you already have a selection of small screwdrivers and allen keys, you should be alright with that little lot! I do all my setups (and my mate's) with that small tool kit. Add a soldering iron and the world's your oyster! Books: How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great by Dan Erlwine (comes with a good DVD) and Haynes Fender Bass Manual by Paul Balmer have been invaluable. Edited March 7, 2013 by Walker Quote
citymariner Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 I really want to add some radius gauges/ string height rule and then some radius blocks to start off with. Fret pullers I've made as above. Thanks for the sites. Quote
