risingson
Have we honestly got through this thread without this getting mentioned once? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mln0RciE2o0
Mr. Foxen
I have a half eaten tub of Philadelphia Light in the fridge that's heavier than this
Way to wreck a dude's buzz and give them the munchies. Lifer
Got Pretzels? And after 50 odd (very odd) minutes it certainly seems heavy! Edited March 8, 2013 by Lifer
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
Let's be honest. There are soooo many,) I haven't seen the posts above properly,as I am in pub. Most of us IMHO would say, sabbath / budgie / Metallica . Choosing single songs , is more difficult. I will name many throughout this good thread. At the moment it's ; prong' who's fist is this anyway' . Supernaut by sabbath/ & enter sandman
bobbass4k
Overlooking the more obvious "heavy for the sake of heavy" bands, I'd go for: The whole song is pretty brutal, but I was mainly thinking of the outro riff, listen from about 2:59 for the full effect: Edited March 8, 2013 by bobbass4k
MonkeyTrick
Wow , are this lot still going ? I saw them opening for Rush , it must be nearly twenty years ago , and people were booing and throwing stuff at them .
Yeah! They are absolutely amazing live too. They basically absorbed Big Business - - a while back and are a crazy super-band now. I recommend this as a taste of the new sound (plus a tasty Bass intro): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myPvDXym-dE Edited March 8, 2013 by MonkeyTrick
MacDaddy
They did it first
Vanilla Fudge and Iron Butterfly were doing 'heavy' stuff before Sabbath.
bobbass4k
A couple more: Not really sure I'd call any of this a riff, but this is heavy guitar music at it's absolute best (this is my favourite song but check out Sputnik or Machines Part II if you want something shorter): And it wouldn't be a heavy riff thread without Amplifier:

xilddx
I still love my old band FISTER. I decided to leave the band not long before these were recorded and released on the debut album. My bro wrote all the songs and fronted the band on guitar and vocal. Steve Rooney on drums, Jason on bass. Heavy as f*** I thought in 1999. Dingus
Vanilla Fudge and Iron Butterfly were doing 'heavy' stuff before Sabbath.
Cream were doing it before either of those two , but neither Iron Butterfly or Vanilla Fudge were heavy in the direct and crushing way that Sabbath were - they both had much more light and shade in their music due to the prescence of keyboards and the influence of pschedelic pop music in their sound . It was Sabbath who honed their stripped - down loud electric blues into metal as we now know it and as it came to dominate the world . KingBollock
I think all those people, and there are many, that refuse to listen to Motorhead "because they have spent the last 30 years sounding exactly like their Ace of Spades era", because they have never actually listened to anything since then, would be surprised at what they have been doing and just how heavy they are. http://youtu.be/HXPHuT22yH4
