TheGreek
They've got one at the Bass gallery for £3500: http://www.thebassga...=2344&type=Bass Guitar This seems a bit extreme for a something that you're not 100% sure of - a few 5ers have sold here for between £1100-1800 but I'm not sure how relevant this is. This is a very specialist instrument, wouldn't think that there are too many of these about - I think the questions you seem to be asking are "how much are you prepared to pay", against "how much are you prepared to lose if you don't get on with it" ?? Only you know the answers to these...You might also ask "in what situations am I going to be able to use it", and "how much of a market is there going to be if I choose to sell"? This is a pretty unique tool after all. It does look like a nice bass..though I'm not too sure about these fretted/fretless boards. Good luck with whatever you choose to do. BigRedX
While every Sei is a fantastic bass, you have to remember that each one is individually tailored to suit the person who originally ordered it. I would be very reluctant to buy a second hand Sei simply because there is a good chance that the actual instrument wouldn't suit me at all. I had a 5-string fretless made for me and while I was waiting for Martin to do the final tweaks I had a go on another Sei, which on paper had a very similar specification to mine. However when it came to playing, that bass really didn't do anything for me in terms of feel or sound. Mine was absolutely perfect, because it was exactly what I wanted. The other bass was a nice instrument, but it was what someone else wanted and not me. Does that make sense?

There is a but ... with this instrument for aesthetic reasons I do not really like it. is too black. When it comes to resale on how quickly you think the amount would be attractive enough for a feed him rather quickly to get rid of? but if it comes to what you said, "though I'm not too sure about these fretted / fretless boards" is a particular case of this case, and in general the philosophy of building hybrid bass? BigRedX
The get a luthier that you trust to build you exactly the bass that you want. That Sei was the bass that someone else (at the time it was made) wanted.

Spoombung
I think you've answered your question: don't buy it. Crazy, quirky, half-fretted thing. It's unlikely to suit you -and you don't like black.

BigRedX
Well looking at the pricing options on the Sei website, to have one made new to that specification would cost in the region of £4000. If you have the option of buying it for £1200, that's a pretty good deal. However it is a very individual instrument so the potential market for it is going to be considerably lower than usual for a custom instrument. Unless I knew that half fretted/fretless was the instrument I wanted, I wait and go and try as many different basses as I could in order to get a better idea of what I really wanted, rather than buy this.
