sblueplanet
The for sale thread has gone very quiet. Not enough lefties out there or just a lack of lefty traffic coming to the site?

sblueplanet
Still waiting on a Bass mag doing a feature on why many manufacturers aren't offering lefty models across the range.
Silvia Bluejay
Bit of a catch-22 here. Many left-handed people learn to play instruments right-handed because there are too few models, and they don't sell on easily, and manufacturers don't offer more left-handed models because there are far fewer left-handed players than left-handed people (the latter already being a minority).
I've owned several right-hand basses which I've played upside down. It's not always an issue but when you see something that you would like to own but find it'd not offered as a lefty that is frustrating. Given that the most famous bass player alive in the world today is a lefty then it's even more of an issue and manufacturers should be pressured to produce lefty models for future talented southpaws out there. Silvia Bluejay
I'm in awe. I simply can't get along with wrongly-shaped basses, as in righties used upside-down. It's not just the knobs in the wrong place, it's the moulding of the back and the cutouts, and basically everything else... Even worse than having to use "normal" scissors with your left hand (I now use them with my right out of desperation).
PaulWarning
once saw a very good Hendrix tribute, he played a lefty strat upside, amused me no end when I saw it
sblueplanet
I've mostly stuck to symmetrical shaped bodies when playing righties upside down. I've owned 2 Hofner 500/1, Steinberger L2 fretless, Gibson EB0. Other righties I've had include a Vantage, Westone and Aria fretless. All current basses are lefty but my two acoustic guitars are righthand models.
LeftyJ
Aren't you experiencing any intonation troubles with your righthanded acoustics? Or did you have the bridge saddles modified to the correct angle? If they're steelstrings, of course. I just realised, while typing this, that the saddle on a nylonstring isn't compensated for intonation. I'm thankful I've never had to bother turning a righty upside-down. My parents didn't have internet yet when I started playing guitar (when I was 16 - I'm 29 now) so my first instrument was the only lefty my local shop had in stock: a Squier Affinity Strat. By the time I started playing bass though, we did have internet and I was always able to find something to my liking on it
sblueplanet
It's actually no problem for me with righties as I also play with strings in reverse so no change needed except position markers on edge of fretboard. That's why I prefer righty acoustics. All my lefty electric instruments have to have the nut reversed or changed although I can also play a little the normal way too and sometimes have a bass that is strung the proper way. LeftyJ
Oh, that's right. I knew that. D'oh I was wondering the same thing when I saw your ads for the Sterling Ray and the MIJ Jazz, where the Jazz had the strings reversed but the Ray did not.
Nice, seems a good deal indeed. Just need to shift my corvette now but can't see that happening any time soon! I remember a few years ago there being a huge Fender thread where people went into detail about MIJ, MIM, MIA etc. and how good they were during different decades - does anyone know what I'm on about? I've tried to find it, to no avail
sblueplanet
Lots of debate about jazz basses. Mainly does country of origin and price reflect the quality? Personally I've played some 60's and 70's US Fender basses that have been dogs, while occasionally I've played a beauty. I own a few jap ones at the moment (1P + 2J) but that's been down to price, 2nd hand and of course, availability. I have bid for the occasional lefty vintage US lefty bass but the final price is always beyond what I'm willing to pay.

throwoff
I am one of the lucky few to have had some real one on one time with a 50's lefty P bass, you know what I thought of it? It felt like an old flimsy bass that was as likely to crap out as give you great tone. As with any bass, buy the one your heart yearns for, not what the facts and figures tell you.
