Lew-Bass Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013
I am one of the lucky few to have had some real one on one time with a 50's lefty P bass, you know what I thought of it? It felt like an old flimsy bass that was as likely to crap out as give you great tone. As with any bass, buy the one your heart yearns for, not what the facts and figures tell you.
It's just so much harder for us lefties though isn't it! Nothing worse than say trying something out upside-down and loving the tone and feel, to find out there is no LH version Quote
leftybassman392 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I'm embarrassed to admit that I've only just found this thread! On the other hand, my life priorities have changed somewhat in the last couple of years so perhaps not so surprising. All the same... Quote

I remember Patch talking about getting an ACG last year. I see you've got another one as well. Nice! I've whittled my collection down a bit now that I don't do it for a living any more. I only have five now! I did buy a new guitar though.... it's in the 'Other instruments' forum under 'Rob Williams Custom Build' or some such. Quote
Dread Bass Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Thats quite a reduction isn't it? I love the ACGs Patch's looks awesome. Quote
timmo Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 I am thinking of getting a left hand bass. Anyone any thoughts on this as a beginners bass please? There are some nice basses, but a bit out of my price range at the moment. Currently I have one bass at home, and one at work, but they are right handed. I wanted to try a cheap left hand one first, then get a better one later on if I am getting on better with a left handed one Quote

I was glad to see it go tbh, very uninspiring tone and feel. Get a modern cheapie - they are much better than the budget 'classics' imho. Edited August 26, 2013 by OldG Quote
DorsetBlue Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 (edited) Had a depressing trawl around music shops over the summer (GAK and Andertons), expecting to find the perfect bass and failing (so much so, I ended up with a guitar instead - see Other Instrument Porn thread!). Tried a Gibson EB 2013, liked how it sounded but did not get on with the neck and the finish was not very good for the price (bubbling in the paint around the neck joint etc). Picked up a Squier VM70s, loved the neck but boy does it weigh some and only Righties were available so could not play. So, having decided that I am a J neck man (my Cort is a little on the chunky side too and although I love the sound, I keep returning to my Squier VM), I am struggling to find basses that meet what I want which is: Maple Jazzlike Neck. Red or Blue body (open to style and pickup configuration). I would love to buy left handed alder/ash Jazz bodies and maple necks and make my own but I cannot find anyone in the UK that seems to do it (excepting Sims but they seem to be more expensive than importing from Warmoth). So unless anyone knows any better, I guess I would have to be Warmoth bound? EDIT: noted the Gordon Smith Gryphon bass, which I love the styling of but the neck looks on the chunky side. DorsetBlue Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Hmm, I wonder if an Ibanez SR600 neck would fit on a Cort B4? Quote

DorsetBlue Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Inspired by a sudden love of white instruments (all the Gibson SGs fault), I am rather taken by the Epi Thunderbird Pro Classic in White (although it could do with a black scratchguard). Now this does not come in left handed (neither does the full Gibson...in White) but looking at the shape, it looks like one of the few basses that would actually look better upside down (I know about Non-Reverses but they don't look as good IMHO). Any upside down TB lefties here, do the controls get in the way, did you reverse the strings? Quote
rogerstodge Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 You'd be forever moving the controls with your arm i reckon. Us poor lefties eh!. Other than that its a matter of turning the nut round and reversing bridge saddles, oh yea and theres the strap button on the horn. Quote
sblueplanet Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 You can put blu-tack under the controls to fix them in the position you want. I did this with a few basses I played upside down. Quote
