Dolando
Hi, Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I'm building this; http://basschat.co.uk/topic/189801-warmoth-jazz-5-swamp-ashzebra-wood-top-new-pics/page__fromsearch__1 I'm wanting to make a control cover out of wood, and I've been told that gluing a thin zebra wood veneer to some maple is the best way to go, but I can't find anywhere that sells what I'm after. I'd need a piece around 150mm x 230mm that would be about 3-4mm thick. So, does anyone know of anywhere in the UK I could get some from, or if someone has an offcut I'd be happy to send money to pay for the wood plus postage. Thanks in advance, Adam
Roland Rock
Post Victorian era, wood 3-4mm thick is not known as veneer, so maybe that's where you're having trouble in your search. Have a chat with Bob at Timberline, he'll sort you out: http://www.exotichardwoods.co.uk/Woods_List/Boxmaker.asp
Dolando
Thanks, I did think there must be a reason why I can't find it. I wasn't sure where the veneer measurement cutoff would be. I'll check that out. Thanks again.
Pete1967
Ditto what RR says about the thickness of the veneer. Nowadays veneer is typically .6mm. If that's what you need then this might do the trick http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wood-Veneer-Samples-/370576274467?pt=UK_Crafts_Other_Crafts_EH&var=&hash=item5648113423 but if you need the 3mm maple then you probably will need to have that specially thicknessed.
Ah, I just read the OP again, and see what you mean - I thought you meant 3mm zebrano, which is available in link I posted. Should do the trick though? It will also save the hassle of veneering :-)
Dolando
Well I rang up the people you gave the lik for, and he was really helpful. He seemed to think zebrano should be ok, but I'd have to buy a lot (well more than i need) to be eligible for postage, I only need a a square of it. So if anone knows where I could order smaller amounts wood be great. If not, he did say it might be worth getting a 3mm plywood, and venering that on both sides....I cold cheat and glue veneer to the plastic, but would like it to be made of wood, but i don't like to cheat. Any thoughts?
Big_Stu
So if anone knows where I could order smaller amounts wood be great.
I was looking for some veneer last year and was given some medium oak stuff by a cabinet-maker in Brierfield, I forget the name* but they were on a corner on the main street. If you want to try your idea in oak give me a shout I've a fair bit left. It rolls up when dry but should flatten if it gets soaked. Failing that, have a search for a high quality cabinet maker or furniture restorer in your area. edit: * I lied; Dewars - Google Street View is your friend. Dolando
Hi stu, Thanks for the reply. What thickness is your oak? If rolled flat, would it be strong enough for a control cover. If so, i would be Interested in getting a bit from you. Thanks, Adam
Big_Stu
It's the thin stuff, less than 1 mm so no it wouldn't do a cover on it's own, you have to glue it under pressure to something else. I just had a look at it & it's dried into a tight roll (which is about 2 ft long) so I wouldn't want to open it out flat, it would probably split. I'll try soaking it for a while & see what happens, but I would guess it would do an average cover, but not something like an Gibson RD Artist. That Dewars place is a French Polisher & Restorer, they were very helpful with me, maybe they'd advise you?
Dolando
Oh right ok, don't go to too much trouble just yet. I want a cover tha would match a wood on my bass, so either ash, zebra wood, Wenge, or ebony, but that's possibly pricey. I had to google that guitar, I've never seen one of those before! I think I'll call them up tomorrow. Thanks.
