ezbass Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Who knows what the 'verse' is in, it's probably jumping from something standard like 4/4 for one bar then to something like 5/4 for another. To be clear I'm not saying that's what it does, but it does sound compound. The 'chorus' just sounds like a straight 6/8 shuffle. All I know is that it's good to know someone else is listening to PSP too. They've gone a bit quiet recently (probably due to Pino and Si Phillips' session demands) but I hope they'll be back with more soon. Quote
phlebas Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I make the verse a bar of 15/8 followed by a bar of 7/8. IE: 1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e+a 1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e 1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e At least, I managed to count along with it that way... Quote
bobbass4k Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Time signatures are such a subjective thing when it comes down to it, you can even see it in this video, Pino's tapping his foot in quarters and the keyboardist (don't know his name,I'm impressed I recognized Pino...) is tapping his foot along in eights, so they're both counting it differently. Personally I'd count it (the first bit at least) as 3 bars of 5/8 and a bar of 7/8, but that's equivalent to 2 bars of 11/8, or a bar of 15/8 and a bar of 7/8, or you could write it out as a single bar of 11/4. Personally I don't like time signatures bigger than 7/4, I think they're unwieldy, so that colours my hearing of time sigs, this could very will have been written as 11/4, but I prefer to break it down as w bars of 5.8 and a bar of 7/8. Music theory probably dictates which one is correct, but I think as long as it works for you, who's to say it's wrong? Quote
ubassman Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013
2 bars of four, one bar of 3.
+1 on that .... keep it simple!! ..the pulse and vibe is over three bars . Simple as that. Behind the melody count and feel 4/4 first bar, 4/4 again in 2nd bar , then a bar of 3/4, ...much easier than thinking of the phrase and counting 11 beats ( I challenge anyone to get a groove counting 11s )! Really enjoyed listening to Pino - thanks for the post ! Quote
bobbass4k Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013
I challenge anyone to get a groove counting 11s
Challenge accepted: Of course groove is subjective, but for me those both have 11/8 sections that are really easy to lock into and groove along to. ubassman Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Thanks for that ! ( ...I kind of deserved that didn't I ! ) Agreed, both are easy to lock into and groove along to. Interesting though that what I hear particularly in the second clip is 5 whole beats and a quaver tagged onto the end. For me thats the vibe of the music i.e. "1,2,3,4,5 & " ( the keyboard leads the way ) rather than counting 11 quick quavers in each bar . With the original PSP post I personally find that I can follow the groove really quickly feeling two easy bars of 4/4 with a 3/4 bar thrown in. For me much easier than counting 11/4 - I think as long as you feel the groove it probably doesn't matter how you do it ! Quote
