Black basses: Cool or boring?

My vote was "boring" just because I feel there's little about a black bass that I'd call cool, and there's so many black basses around that it tends to get a bit boring.

That said, two of mine are black, and I could well live with all my basses being black, and would not like all of them to be white, red, green, orange or, heaven forbid, sunburst.

This one, without them there metally stripes across the long slim part did in fact charm me:

So... sunburst basses should have... sunburst necks?
Depends on the design. However the colour of the neck should follow on from the colour of the body like this Pedulla Buzz:

I'm guessing sunburst is not in BRX's list of top finishes.

I don't own any traditional sunburst finish instruments, but I do have 2 with "bursts" - the Pedulla shown above and this FretKing Esprit guitar with a black burst finish:

After seeing that lovely Status above, maybe I just need some LEDs! :D
Only if they are black ones! B)

I find many black basses rather boring, but they can also be very chic. I love the look of my MIJ '75 Jazz reissue, but I wouldn't have liked the look of it with a rosewood fingerboard and without the pickup cover.

I really dont like black basses or guitars, but I just bought.... a MIJ 62 reissue in black with a white scratch plate - probably my least-liked combination.

But it plays nice and sounds good, so.....

Equally, I really dont like maple necks but of all the basses I have owned, only three of them actually had rosewood fingerboards!

Go figure...

Dammit, I've just accidentally voted on "boring", as a proud owner of a black / maple MV4, I obviously meant to vote the other way...it has to be with a maple neck though, for me...in fact, I'd say I agree with Dave Vader and Muzz a few pages back, I'd go "it depends"...Black/Maple, "cool"...Black/Rosewood, "boring"....

I meant sunburst finish on the front of the neck. No one looks at the back.
IMO the most important person looks at the back - the owner of the bass. That's why I don't like basses where the neck doesn't match the body, or worse where the back of the body doesn't match the front, because these are the bits I see all the time when I'm playing it!

I've no problem with getting a sunburst on the front of the neck, however I've yet to see a finish on the fingerboard that has sufficient long-term durability to be worth doing this.

Should..? I don't like painted necks. I don't like lacquered necks, either.

I used to own a 70's Fender that was black. I thought the finish was too much like plastic so I stripped it back to natural. However, I now lean towards finding a suitable black bass again. I agree about the white pickguard on black combination being a turn-off. I do like a bit of chrome though.
