Black basses are cool. What's even cooler is stripping the black bass to show some nice wood.

I'm possibly going to spray my project bass (P body, MM bridge pup, J nexk pup and jazz neck) black. It'll have a new B/W/B plate fom the Bass Doc and a maple neck and fingerboard. Black and maple? I should say so!

Or with silver strings & pussy magnet...

If your project is just wood, have you considered giving it a black stain or even a black ceruse finish (if you have the patience)?

It's not black anymore. :(

It looks like this....

:D

Though I've since changed the knobs for cream with a black marker & replaced the toggle with a moog style knob (that controls one of my moog pedals).

It's really that simple. Although I think it only really applies to Fender-type instruments, because nothing looks sexier than a black Thunderbird with a white pickguard.

My opinion:
Black P-Bass/J-Bass with white pickguard is boring. But I saw so many awesome black basses that I vote on "cool". Heck, replace that white pickguard with a tort one and it goes from dull to cool. Black matte lacquer looks particularly awesome in my opinion. Very glossy black finish has this one irritating issue - fingerprints, fingerprints everywhere! But nonetheless - black is cool.

Oh, and if my bass would look dull for me after a while but sounded perfect to me, I wouldn't swap it for the same model in a different colour. Too much at stake, as we know two basses of the same model and year could sound completely different.

I've never considered myself to be particularly "vain" about my basses but recently I've been thinking about swapping my gloss black bass for something more colourful. I love playing it, it feels and sounds incredible, and has that nice "played in" feel that my new Virgin White one doesn't yet have.

A replacement would be exactly the same model (possibly), just a different colour: Am I an idiot?

How do you feel about black basses?

This is it below (other two now long gone):

Ever thought about getting the black bass refinished?

Nice set! Can you tell a noob like me what models they are?
Sabre, Jack Casady?, unknown, something Jazzy?, something Jazzy?
I also see a Korg 700S there. Does it still work? Well built those things were.

left to right they are...

you're right about the sabre and the jack casady, then there's a status shark, my trusty japanese fender jazz and finally a status t-bass.

and yes, the korg still works fine - could do with a good clean, but still going strong.

Thanks! Had no idea the scratchplate could be so pointy on the lower horn. Learn something every day, eh?

As to the Korg: Kool!

It's all about the scratchplate...

If my 83 JV Precision (in avatar pic) had a white one it would be really, really dull.

But it hasn't, so it isn't.

Would Phil Lynott have played one if he thought it looked boring?

Of course he would! That's how cool he was!

Depends on the bass.

BTW most "black" basses aren't.

IMO for a bass to be properly considered black, the only allowable non-black items are: frets, fret markers and strings
[/quote]

That makes my Vigier "black".
Even the hole in the jack socket is black... ;)
