Ian Savage
My band play tuned down to C standard but we still refer to the lowest note we can get as an 'E' and so on; I haven't got a HOPE of knowing what note I'm playing.
W11ATO
I can honestly say if anyone asked what note that was, I'd have to think about it, I couldn't always say it straight off the cuff, certainly not at the dusty end. I don't read dots and I've never tried writing music, so to me a fretboard isn't an alphabet of notes but more a map of shapes
Jimryan
I often find that I'll play it but not know what it is. I've learnt something one way, started playing and my hands play it another way altogether.
risingson
For those of you guided by shapes, you're in good company. Stuart Zender: "I see shapes and patterns on the fretboard rather than scales. Usually I just try and feel the groove" (BGM Jan 2010)
Most guys proficient in theory are doing the same as that too, with their minds slightly more open to what they're actually playing.
