aende Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Hi all, I am borrowing a warwick corvette bubinga standard - German built. However, I have seen a warwick streamer double buck for sale in a local store for £950. The bass played well, needed strings and a setup. There was the odd scrape and scratch, but nothing untoward for a well used bass. Anyway, questions; Is £950 too much for a streamer double buck secondhand? I am waiting for my house exchange, next week, and a bonus due in April. So, I am not in a hurry to buy, but are these rare enough for me to warrant buying it now? Anyone got any experience of tones and range of the double buck? It is a German built one. I think it is maple bodied - light coloured wood. Quote

Dingus Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 (edited) I think the are superb sounding basses with lots of great and very usable sounds , but £950 sounds a bit over the odds , especially for a well - used one . As WH says , you will be able to get a fresher one cheaper on here . Keep your options oipen would be my advice - you can get some fantastic bargains at the moment if you have got cash in your hand . It sounds like the one you have seen is an ash body . Edited March 22, 2013 by Dingus Quote
aende Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 Thanks guys, I will keep looking as I thought that ~ 1k was a bit high. Worst case, I will go with a corvette double buck! Quote
thisnameistaken Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 When they sell on here they are usually much cheaper - around the £600 mark. Quote
warwickhunt Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Am I cracking up... I thought that I had replied to this exact question already (and given various pointers to other BC sales that were significantly cheaper)! Quote
warwickhunt Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Phew panic averted... I retain my sanity! Double post - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/203183-a-little-helpwarwick-i-up/page__pid__2020447#entry2020447 Quote

aende Posted March 23, 2013 Author Posted March 23, 2013 My bad!! Apologies! Can a mod delete this one? Quote
aende Posted March 23, 2013 Author Posted March 23, 2013 Yeah, I am fixated on the streamer double buck tbh.... I am straining at the bit even though I know it is overpriced! Thanks for the sales links, I may put a wanted up! Quote
aende Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 I bought a Fortress Masterman!! 1995 model!!! Not plugged it in yet, gotta hide from the wife...! Quote
Lfalex v1.1 Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Damn good choice. I bought a Fortress Masterman 5 a while back (’97, though) Excellent instrument. Cost just over £500, and the number of variations around the basic core tone are almost infinite. Just can't fault mine. Enjoy. Quote
aende Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 Plugged it in when my wife went out; my god!!! What an array of different tones from a single pickup. I am now educated about pickup placement and how important it really is. A single twin coil pickup with a pre amp for each coil. Who came up with that craziness! I am loving it! at first I was not sure about the shape, the top horn looks slightly phallic, but it had grown on me and I think it looks great. The shape is certainly as beautiful as the favoured corvette and streamer. I am also more educated about neck material and how important it is on a bass. The neck is wenge, I think adds to the earthiness of the sound. A great sounding, flexible and simple to use bass with great balance and an exclusive look. The one I bought was on eBay, apparently ex Carrie Melbourne. 1 Quote
Lfalex v1.1 Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Completely agree with that! I know Carrie Melbourne had a purple one at some point, but don't know which model. I love the way you can get a slightly more nasal tone using the pan pot to favour the bridge coil, then beef it up a bit by adding what would otherwise be too much bass eq to the neck coil. They sound better with the pan pot off- centre, as there's less cancellation between the coils. Only downside- a bit of hum sensitivity when it's not dead-centre. 1 Quote
