His dad lead the house band at the Majestic Ballroom, Reading, on trumpet and Derek followed in his footsteps as a great player. He was on lead trumpet in a big band I played in during the late sixties. We had an important gig one evening and Derek couldn't do it. So he sent Tony Fisher as a dep.
