ashgeezer Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Im sat here listening to Sabbath on my mp4 player (better than watching britains got talent) and wondering who everyone thinks is the best rock/metal bassist. I"m expecting a lot of diversity and probably names i"ve never even heard off but it should be interesting (no arguments guys this is a bit of fun). My personal fave has to be "Geezer Butler" Quote

Clarky Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 PS, while on subject of Hawkwind, Lemmy's long-time replacement Alan Davey is a cracking and underrated bass player too Quote

dudewheresmybass Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 there are so many players that have influenced the bass 'scene' i find it impossible to name just one. I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Steve Harris yet! but don't forget Cliff, Geezer big +1 to steve DiGiorgio Billy Sheehan John Entwhistle etc, etc, etc, etc Quote
Jase Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 All of the above mentioned so far had a huge impact on me....one other chap who I reckon always deserves a tip of the hat is Burke Shelley BUT!!! the best ever for me is (already mentioned) Billy Sheehan. I LOVE "BEST EVER THREADS" Quote
ashgeezer Posted May 28, 2008 Author Posted May 28, 2008 This man has to be on my list as well, very underated Quote
Doc B Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 I'd go with John Paul Jones, John Entwhistle and Billy Gould Quote
DirkThrust Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 I vote for Glenn Hughes based on his time with Deep Purple. Not just a superb player but awesome sound and one of the greatest voices in Rock music. Quote
charic Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Hmm, my faves altho maybe not the best: Steve Harris Dave Ellefson John Myung Freeman from rancid Quote

bnt Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 (edited) +1 for Cliff Williams - classic minimalist style, gets the job done and then some. Ditto for Frank Bello (Anthrax). When I think Metal bass, I don't usually think "flashy" - but Rob Trujillo (Metallica) has been a monster for years, way back to the days of Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves: Edited May 28, 2008 by bnt Quote
