burno70
Billy Gould's an excellent shout, he hardly gets mentioned on bass forums and I don't know why, he's a class act. Pure metal it's gotta be Steve Harris for me. I love Tim Commerfords style and sound too alhough that's more of a hip hop - metal hybrid thang! King of Loss
I enjoy Pete Trewavas, Sean Malone, and Jonas Reingold.....I think they are a good deal bit more interesting than alot of guys who have been mentioned. Their bands, however, were never as big.
Adrenochrome
Steve Harris! ...but great shouts for some of my favourite tech bassists (eg Ryknow) and solid bassists (eg Cliff W).
Deep Thought
John Paul Jones for me.
Murph_Orpheus
Phil Lynnott was great indeed. But I'm surprised no one has even mentioned Rex Brown yet, he has been the biggest influence on me. The guy has the biggest live bass sound I've ever heard as well. And how could we forget about Justin Chancellor!
Jonny Walker
Has no one voted for Justin Chancellor yet?
Bassassin
+1's for Geddy, Entwhistle, Cass Lewis (awesome player), Geezer for "proper" metal, Lemmy - so much more than just bass playing though! A big personal favourite - Dennis Dunaway from the original Alice Cooper group, one of the most inventive & versatile pick players I've ever heard. Currently I really like Martin Mendez from Opeth - very adventurous & melodic player, always tasteful & never inappropriate. Also Colin Edwin from Porcupine Tree - solid, versatile & sometimes a little bit surprising. This is starting to sound like wine-tasting comments! Justin Chancellor's good - but he does play very, very like his predecessor, Paul D'Amour. He didn't play much like that in his previous band, Peach. Jon. Jonny Walker
Maybe originally but JC's lines are allot more complex than they used to be (not a bad thing) not sure that Paul D'Amour could cope with the new stuff.
7string
Billy Sheehan, Steve Harris. I'm going to add Marco Mendoza as well. Amazing player fretted or fretless...
Bassassin
Maybe originally but JC's lines are allot more complex than they used to be (not a bad thing) not sure that Paul D'Amour could cope with the new stuff.
Certainly Tool's music's a lot more complex these days & I suppose Justin basically played D'Amour's bass parts on Aenima - most of that album was written & demoed before he joined. I do think that has sort of established JC's playing style - and also his writing style on 10,000 Days. His playing's great - entirely appropriate for Tool. J.
