Just came across this fairly recent rendition of a classic.

Pete T. isn't as deep in the pocket as I'd like, but ... everyone else is just SO relaxed and together. I love it.

My verdict: I think the drummer's got a fairly decent sense of time. (hehe). The bass, starting from the tone, isn't a deep in the pocket kind of affair, but the whole works [i]so well.[/i]

Marillion were a band I really tried hard to get into back in the day (all my pals were well into them around the time of Brave) but... every time the drummer plays a fill it sounds like he's playing a different song. It totally ruins it for me.

Well, they have been playing that track for thirty years now, so they bloody well [i]should[/i] be relaxed and together!

Ian Mosely is a decent drummer, and certainly streets ahead of Mick "the kitchen" Pointer... But I personally think that Marillion lost any kudos and edge when Fish left. His solo material is so much more interesting than anything they have done since Season's End.

I prefer Pete T's work with Transatlantic. Much tighter and better "pocket" playing (if such a thing exists in any kind of "prog" related music!).

Me too. A mate of mine who was on their crew got me a pass for their "homecoming" gig on their '85 tour in Edinburgh. I was fairly unimpressed, I've seen better but I've seen a fair few a lot worse. They got a lot of stick for being a Scottish Genesis but I never saw it myself.
But I did think having the whole of the stage floor as a giant Beano comic was inspired, though you couldn't see much of it after a while because the whole of it was covered by bread rolls thrown by the fans. It was distinct "WTF" night.
Used to drink in the same boozer as Fish up there & he was a grand lad, always stood his round & took a lot off stick off the punters.

Yeah, I never got that. Fish was the only Scot in the band! And he joined them down in Aylesbury, where they were based for years...

Didn't know that, Edinburgh rumour was they were all Jambo's. His mum & dad used to run a nearby garage/filling station.

I heard a story that in their pre-fame days Fish had some stage banter about them not having eaten for days & a punter threw his sandwich on the stage for them, hence the buns tradition.
Dunno if it's just a story or true tho'.

The garage was in Dalkieth. And the Jambo thing is massively ironic as Fish is a huge Hibs fan!

I used to love Marillion, other than Fish. His style really put me off after a while and i stopped listening to them.
I was never in to all the earlier Prog w***fest type of stuff, but if im honest Pete T. was a bit of an influence on my playing back then.

Agreed. I was pretty much raised on early Marillion - One of my earliest memories is sitting in the back of the family 2CV, arriving at my nan and grandad's just as Punch and Judy was playing.
Odd the things you remember.
I'm not a huge fan of the whole 'Neoprog' thing but I still listen to Fugazi - great album and some stunning clank going on.
