Guest MoJo
Steels are too bright for me. Nickels every time
Lozz196
Yes, I`m a recent convert from steel Roto rounds to nickel Roto rounds. They`re warmer, which suits me as I preferred worn-in steels anyway, but seem to keep their tone a lot longer, plus they also seem to stay in tune immediately, less string-pulling/re-tuning needed. geoffbyrne
Unfortunately, nickels turn my fingers black. Looks awful! G.
neepheid
Nickel Hartke 45-105s almost exclusively. If they don't fit (ahem, RD Artist) then it's super long D'Addario XL nickels. Both have a nice feel, not too rough but not too smooth and they're plenty bright enough for me.

Hobbayne
I have been using nickels for a couple of years now. I find they are brighter and easier on the fingers.

Wow! Strings are probably the single biggest thing that affects your tone, your bass will sound completely different with D'addario Chromes compared to Status Hotwires for example. Or Fat Beams to Ernie Ball Slinkys. Do some experimenting, you'll be amazed.
mep
Joined the nickel club a couple of years ago and love them on all basses except my active Charvel which craves steel rounds.

steve-bbb
20 squid for a set of nickel swingbass is a lot if you not on mega wages! - the steel swingbass set which i just threw away had been on there since last June and were totally gone

[/quote] I'd say £35 quid is on the high side, but yes if you do a proper back to back comparison it can cost a fortune. But there are plenty of people recommending strings here on Basschat which helps narrows it down a bit.

risingson
Love nickel strings, do not like steels at all, too clanky.
