The first video made me so upset that I had to stop 22 seconds in, almost immediately I had to put on the original record to remind myself why no one should ever try to tap it out on a bass and why it is such a brilliant standalone Macca track (can't improve on a masterpiece, just IMO). The second I was pretty indifferent to, fair enough if people like it, it wasn't offensive but it is times like that I would personally reach for a guitar as I don't bass fills the role even half as well. 4 Strings
The solo chap is clearly very capable but, for me, it is very dull to listen to. Its interesting in a 'he's doing that on a bass' sort of way. Novelty wears off quickly for me. Even the drummer sounds bored. MiltyG565
It doesn't sound good to me. It sounds more like a bassist showing off just how good they are at playing bass rather than showing off how good they are at music. I watched a Scott Devine video recently where he said he didn't like teaching slap because people get stuck there, and don't learn how to play harmonically. In my personal opinion, a lot of solo bass players go too far the other way. I don't find much interesting about a bass on its own, but within the context of a band, a good bassline is a fantastic thing, outside of a band, it's just a guy playing a bass, and nobody is really interesting in that, not even most bassists, obviously. 4 Strings
Going rather off the original subject here, but as I mentioned Jaco earlier, if you're doubling up with the likes of Joe Zawinal and Wayne Shorter you do not have any space for mistakes. These guys absolutely know their stuff and there are no short cuts to being able to play like this. You'll notice how the bass and keys are doubling with what may to some sound like random notes. http://youtu.be/I63bOi477cA I've played with a couple of jazz players, did this morning with this chap: http://www.andrewnoble.org/default.html He's a phenomenal musician and there's absolutely nothing that goes unintentionally. I certainly can't keep with him.
