Pete Academy Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 I know we had a thread about the Nile Rodgers programme on BBC4, but I was gobsmacked all over again by Bernard Edwards' bass parts. Those two guys have got to be the best guitar/bass rhythm section ever. Quote
uncle psychosis Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Its hard to think of a better one. Rare that musicians achieve Critical and Popular success too---Nile's played on over £10bn dollars worth of music, if that documentary was accurate Quote
nugget Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 couldnt agree more! Total groove playing like no one else Quote
YouMa Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 I still rate Bernard as the best just because he did what the bass was supposed to do. Pure groove, the dude must have had seriously strong fingers. Quote
Pete Academy Posted April 1, 2013 Author Posted April 1, 2013 His sound and groove were just sublime. Quote

They sing, they aren't just guitar chords, they actually sing. Quote
YouMa Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 The album cest chic has a track called savoir fayre which has some beautiful guitar work on it. Quote
Bassic Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 We must not forget Tony Thompson their long time drummer who was a integral part of their sound Another lost way way to soon Quote
I'm going to listen to more of his work. And i agree about the bass too. Groove is just what electric bass is for. If you're going to play straight eigths with no groove, don't call yourself a bassist Quote

tonyf Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Chic are VERY much alive with Nile Rodgers being very active as the driving force. Follow him on twitter as he's incredibly engaging and the band seem to have a very full gig diary, particularly in Europe. They're playing in Moseley in Birmingham on 7th July. Going. Stoked. Can't. Wait. Oh. No. lol T Quote

BassBunny Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 I saw them on the "Best Disco in Town" tour a few years back. Omar Hakim on Drums and Jerry Barnes on Bass. Absolutely awesome. Picked a DVD of the tour in Poundland recently. Bargain. Quote

Paul S Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 IndigO2 for sure. Here is a great Chic track that often gets passed by. All about the groove, this one. http://youtu.be/TdM-QzVFWAo Quote
Although Paul Jackson jnr and Louis Johnson on the early Michael Jackson albums [70//80's] were pretty special as well, playing on millions of $'s worth of tracks. That was a good BBC4 Doc the other night. I did manage to see Chic many moon's ago - And BE's playing was real Bass in your face stuff. Garry Quote
wombatboter Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 I still don't understand why Jerry Barnes replaced Edwards...He's a totally different player than Bernard, has another sound and his playing is more than sloppy occasionally (countless times he looses the groove during solo's). He also incorporates slap a lot during these songs while Edwards was very selective in using that...while Edwards was more the quiet one in the back, Barnes draws a lot of attention which gives it another vibe. I don't want to see an Edwards clone but Barnes doesn't do it for me... This is a great Chic instrumental with some tasteful slap http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RqOsLrAv2k Quote
Spoombung Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 They has a honeymoon period of about three years ( that i like)but everything after that - the stuff they did in the eighties, sounds DIRE : gated snares, trebly production, cliched chords in which Edwards bass playing was lost. Its unlistenable. No, I don't miss them...and actually I don't think anybody else does. Quote
lowdown Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 I think it was more than three years, it went back to the early 70's. Chic was their band, but they were also responsible for an awful lot of other artists with their writing, playing and production. Nile is terrific on this, as is BE with some 'chucking' thrown in. Must be the most teasing intro in history... And a Trombone solo thrown in for good fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR6pRNfhlJY The 80's gated snares etc...just a sound of the times, but i know what you mean Spoombung. But still Bernard in all his glory. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z951iR1bM8 Quote
darkandrew Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Linking this thread with another on Radio 2's top 100 albums of all time, how many of their top 100 albums were produced / co-produced by Nile Rodgers? I've spotted 3 (Let's Dance, Diana and C'est Chic), have I missed any? I wonder how that compares with other producers? I can't see any Trevor Horn productions for example. Quote
