Hot Tub
I'm setting up a violin bass for a mate, and I need to put a new set of strings on. He wanted Thomastiks, but they're not available at the moment. Any suggestions for alternatives? Got to be flats, but as I don't play the instrument and I don't use flats, I'm not sure what to go for....? Many thanks!
neepheid
You'll need to find something as pliable. To be honest, if that's the strings he wants then it would be worth it to wait for them, as I don't know of any which are as bendy and compliant as Thomastik flats. Les
Make sure you get the right scale strings, no idea what the Hofner uses but my short scale Mustang needs medium scale strings cos' of it's through body stringing.
Hot Tub
Well, he "thinks" that's what was on it, but isn't sure. I'm seeing him tonight, so will have a chat. I'm thinking La Bellas, as they do a set specifically for the Hofner. Your right about the scale - It takes medium scale strings due to the trapeze bridge. miles'tone
http://www.bassstringsonline.com/Medium-Scale-Flatwound-Bass-Strings_c_915.html Try Jason at Bassstringsonline. He's a top bloke and a regular on talkbass. Ok he's based in the states but he's sorted me out a few times by splitting packs and sending me single strings. Takes about 10-12 days delivery time and is no more expensive than shopping here including payment for postage, sometimes cheaper. He'll have what you want in stock and will offer great advice if you contact him directly. Again, you can shop with confidence. Edit: ps I've never had to pay any duty either. His total is THE total. davehux
You want La Bella 760FHBB strings which are sold as 'Beatle Bass' strings specifically for that bass. I'm waiting for a set to be delivered from these guys http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/LaBella_strings.html as they were the cheapest I found anywhere when searching last week

Hot Tub
Thanks guys! Decided on the La Bellas after all. Hopefully they'll turn up today, as I'm looking forward to getting it finished and having a play before handing it back to its rightful owner!
