Jellyfish
Hi everyone, I've been trying to look around for a nice second-hand drum kit, but am trying to find place where people are selling them. My budget is about £450 and I've looked on ebay and Gumtree, but there isn't much choice really. I'm either getting something pretty awful or something way above my budget. There is one kit on Gumtree in the West Midlands at the moment, a Pearl Export EXR for £470, which is pretty much perfect, but I've not heard amazing things about them so I'm hoping to find an alternative. So where should I be looking? Local classifieds? Or are there any drum forums with UK sellers? Thanks!
charic
I think a drummer mate of mine may be selling one of his. He really looks after his stuff. I'll check
Dad3353
Good afternoon, Jellyfish (or may I call you Jelly..?)... You could try here, perhaps... http://www.drumshack.co.uk/used/90/-1/Second-Hand-Drums ...where I see a reasonable Yamaha Stage Custom Birch kit, or here...
Dunno about the "EXR" bit but my son's been using (& still does) a Pearl Export for 9 years - reckoned it was the floor pedal that was the weak spot & switched it for a Yamaha one. FWIW it was Slade's Don Powell's preferred kit on their spec list for years. No idea if that's a good price though. He's just switched to "Natal" via Marshall who TBH I'd never heard of until then. Jellyfish
Thanks for the advice. Those second-hand kits look great 'Dad' but I did want them in 'Rock' sizes, rather than fusion. I don't know how often things like that pop up either! I'll have to have a think about the EXR kit as well, as I'm 99% sure I want it but if I'd get a better one from waiting, I dunno... Zenitram
Don't forget to buy cymbals! They're the things you should spend most money on, particularly hi hats. Drums are drums are drums, in my experience. Sort of.
Dad3353
Indeed, you didn't mention any specifics as to your purpose, or needs. At the experience level of a beginner or thereabouts, I agree that 'drums are drums are drums'. Tuning them with the best heads (skins..?) for the job is the key; even very modest kits will sound superb (horses for courses, but I find Evans G2 to be the best all-rounders...). The hardware on a 'pro' kit has to stand up to moult manipulation, but for a learner, it's less critical. Cymbals are the real bummer; there are few roads open that imply economy, ime. I'd certainly recommend B20 over any cheaper (brass..? B8..?) material. I've heard good stuff about some of the Stagg range; I have settled for Sabian AAX since playing more pop/rock, and keep the Paistes for recording or jazz/cabaret work. Your budget is meager, but not unworkable. Patience, or a good deal through a BC contact, will probably give the best results. (Drumchat.co.uk will be the best forum, but is not yet available, it seems. Soon (hint, hint...)..?) Edited April 5, 2013 by Dad3353
brensabre79
Nothing wrong with a Pearl Export kit mate. For a few years every other kit I saw was a Pearl Export - they are a pretty solid kit.

Big_Stu
Well, whadya reckon everyone? I don't know enough about drums to say "Go for it", but it looks like a good deal to me; if you know a drummer you respect the opinion of try to get them to give it a look over. Waving cash at the owner may get them to drop it a bit too.
Jellyfish
Cheers Stu. I waved my pocket change at the owner and he said "Okay." So now I need everyone to not recommend me another kit and give me a pat on the back for picking such a great one...
Dad3353
You mean like this..? You'll get over it, I'm sure. It's not the end of the world. No, seriously; well done, and get a few lessons in if you can. It really helps. Let us know how you progress, please..? (...and another plug for DrumChat.co.uk, the best future drum forum out there... )
