Hey all,

I may have an audition with a metalcore band coming up, and if I get the spot I am going to need a 5 string as they play alot of stuff in B and drop A.

I would being looking at used stuff only, as I don't have alot of cash to spare. My first obvious thought is an Ibanez SR505 as they are cheap and alot of people say good things about them, but I was wondering if there are any other options I should consider.

Cheers :)

I've had a BTB 405 QM for a number of years for exactly that purpose. They can be picked up at sensible money from eBay or on here for little money and the B sound great and I think the latter models came with Bartolini pickups. Not to every ones taste, but if it a second or third bass you can't go far wrong i.e http://basschat.co.uk/topic/51108-ibanez-btb405qm-transparent-black-inc-gig-bag-trade-or-fs/

I would recommend an Ibanez BTB, but the don't come up very often. :(

Other than that, an extended scale is going to help (feel nicer) with dropping to A so perhaps a BB if you can do with the string spacing. I found the SR505s to just have rubbish B strings...

+1 on a Yamaha, I've got an rbx765 which I paid 120 quid for, cracking bass, the rbx775 is just as nice and comes in slightly more metal colours.

cheers guys :) I have to say, my first choice would be a spector because they look amazing, after that I think I will look for a Yamaha RBX of some description.

You have answered your own question right here...the Ibanez SR505 (or 605) is the correct answer. No Squier, or the Yamaha RBX is anywhere near as good. Simple.
