rumour6
Deffo go down buying a more powerful unit second hand... if only there was a nearby place selling lots of used bass gear.... hmmmm. The older Trace gear is starting to be no money for what you get (as suggested above).
Perry
Hope I'm not breaking any rules by saying this but you can have my Hartke A100 for £170. Great for practice, jams and small gigs. The Roland is also a great option to go for as FX makes learning more fun.
Delberthot
If its only for home practice then I wouldn't worry about spending a great deal. I use an 80w Meridian guitar combo. Still sounds good and doesn't annoy the nieghbours when I turn it up. Personally, spending £3-400 on something for home practice is a waste of money. I'd rather have that cash go towards my gig rig. Another "personally" from me is that when I first began playing in 1987 I had a 15w Squier guitar amp, cheap curly lead and Marlin Slammer precision copy with peeling chrome bridge. Now that we have the internet and a lot of opinons and choice there's too much emphasis on changing gear and the next big thing. Forget about all that. The most important thing is to listen to as much as you can and just play stuff you want to play and improve yourself as a bass player. I've been playing nearly 26 years and there are a lot of guys on here who have been playing longer. I've got to the point in my bass playing career where I can f*** about with this and that knowing that I have the playing side of things covered. Just play
