Strikes a chord! The lovely Mrs ead has a Focus estate and I have a Mondeo estate - and not forgetting the two kids at different unis, one with a drum kit and a xylophone.

I parked my Mk3 Mondeo estate next to a current (is that Mk2?) Focus estate at work, and they seemed to be pretty much identical in size.

Mondeo estate - 4x10 cab, assorted small cases, brace of 15" active speakers [1], brace of 10" active speakers, guitarist's Peavey 2x12 combo, suitcase-sized lighting rig, speaker and mic stands, and a brace of basses, me and Mrs Zero (and Minus Zero if necessary).

[1] now replaced by Mackie SRM450s so there will be a bit more room

I own VW Golf, but I blag my folks Ford Focus when the misus needs the Golf...both are brilliant for taking a large load. I can fit an EBS Proline 212 and 210 cab, EBS TD650 head, two basses in hard cases, two large sports bags full of leads and stuff, pedal board and stands. All inside with room to spare and I can still carry a passenger. Pretty impressive.

Had 3 Escorts. All did heavy band duty. The 1.3 ohv was the best. Basic as you want. Got myself, guitarist, singer and all gear everywhere.
Now own a Puma, which is a bit of a statement of intent about my gigging future.... There isn't one.

VW Golf or Focus seem to be any musicians choice of vehicle. And no wonder with the room inside them. And reliability even when hitting the 100,000 mile mark.

Currently looking at one or the other for (finally) my first car after years of relying on lifts and public transport.

I was amazed how much I could squeeze into my Rovers. Had a few metro types and then a Rover 25. Never owned any Fords. Had my current Nissan Note (at least it has a musically related name!) for over 3 years with no serious issues though it was a very low mileage second hander and good value. Good load carrier if not the prettiest of vehicals or oozing character. Always try to find a model that is way down the list of potential thieves hit lists.

KevB - when I was helping my mother choose a car for her, I tried out a Note. I loved how comfortable the "drivers workplace" was, it also drove quite nicely. I guess it could also swallow quite a lot of gear but it wasn't a criterium. She ended up choosing a Suzuki SX4 4WD, which is a perfect car for her (a middle-aged lady whose kids have long since "flown out of the nest") - a really nice, very reliable car (no problems whatsoever!) with loads of passenger space - but the load carrying capability is pathethic and the suspension is too firm (drives nicely though). If I were to choose between the two, I'd take the Note, even though the Suzuki looks much nicer and the road clearance is very good for Polish "roads". My little Mazda 323 can swallow more gear than the SX4...

One of the main features I needed when I switched from the Rover 25 was a fairly narrow car as I have a narrow driveway on the side of the house and the Note was one of the few that was as narrow externally as the Rover though they make remarkably good use of the available space internally. I also like the blacked out rear windows on my model so if I have gear in the back it is very difficult to spot by the casual passer-by.

That's a nice feature. I remember the night when I had to leave my cab - an SWR Henry 8x8 - in my car for a night (I had a Citroen ZX then) because I simply couldn't haul it to my flat by myself... It was nerve-wrecking! I covered it with a large blanket but was still very nervous. Luckily, nothing happened.

Most 1.4 diesel fusions are 30quid a year, the odd few of a certain age are the next band up (100) as are the 1.6 diesels.

I feel like that about my fusion, don't hate/love it. It's practical but I don't feel the love for it like my old skoda fabia. Wish i had just got the estate version.

I have a Mk1 Ford Galaxy, which fits my Bass rig, many basses and the Band PA with still room for more.

just a shame that the immobiliser broke this week and the part it needs is 'Main dealer only' and is no longer made by Ford.

When buying my current car( a smaller car that was I was used to) I surprised the dealer when I pulled a gig bag and bass cab out of my old car to see if it would fit the new one.
Not the usual requirement- I think they design these boots with golf clubs or pushchairs in minds- just not bass cabs :-)

Also, I'm surprised you have one that is still somewhat alive, and hope you're aware of the risk of using money on a Galaxy.

Focus' are great! As many here have said, they're surprisingly spacious. I've had 2 rcf 310's with stands, a 24 channel mixing desk, mark bass 210, Aguilar head, cables, lights, bass and a drum kit!

I love mine, though when I get the money saved up I might get a 1.6 diesel version. Has any one here got one? What are the engines like for reliability and efficiency?
