Truckstop Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Hello all, Just curious really. Anyone tried dropping a Squier or MIM Fender J or P to BEAD? I like the idea of it and want to see if it's worth trying. I'd try it with my Mustang but not sure it'd work very well Cheers Truckstop Quote
TheEmperor Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I'd think a Jazz or Precision, being longer scale, would be a much better bet than a 'Stang. Can't see why it wouldn't work, but you'd have to recut the nut to accomodate the heavier gauges. I suppose a cheap bass is a good starting point in that regard! Quote
Lynottfan Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Timmy C of RATM/Audioslave does this a lot, he uses Fender Jazz and variations on, so shouldn't be a problem. Quote
sblueplanet Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I set up my brother's medium scale Yamaha fretless as BEAD using light gauge string set and didnt have to change the nut. Quote
Paul S Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I did it with a Westone Thunder 1A once. Worked a treat. Quote
Truckstop Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 Cool, cheers guys! I guess any well constructed instrument should be able to deal with it well. I suddenly remembered that years and years ago I use a Stagg something-or-other and I tuned that to BADG and it handled the B admirably. Alex Quote

The average low B string is usually much lower tension than a high G. If anything you might need to slacken the truss rod off slightly. Quote
Ed_S Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Yup! Squier Vintage Modified Precision to be exact, and it worked really well. Once I realised it was going to work for gigging I went a bit further and put Schaller locks, a BAII and a SD Quarter Pounder on it too, but the change of bridge was purely aesthetic and nothing to do with the stringing; the BBOT it came with was on it for a few months and worked absolutely fine. Mine's actually set up for use in C,F,Bb,Eb but worked fine in BEAD when I first modified it. And since pictures prove it happened... Quote
Truckstop Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 Went for a Yamaha BB424x (Oly White) to try it with instead! If I'm comfortable with it, I may well end up moving my 425x on! Truckstop Quote
