HOW GOOD ARE STINGRAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Up until around 3 weeks ago id only played stingray basses in shops and never really been impressed as im more of a jazz man out the big three(mm, p, j)...

anyway...
around three weeks ago i put my washburn status up for trade on facebook and a mate of mine had a sub series sitngray for trade so i went ahead and swapped and its just amazing! and if this is that good i cant wait to get a real one!


Today i recieved an olp in the post and immediately deffreted it, and its just great too! Instant pino palladino with an octave pedal :)

So happy with these two basses cannot wait to get a real musicman soon (i have a nate mendel p if anyone wants to do a deal, thought id sneak that in there)...

ill put some photos of my basses in this thread and in the musicman porn thread too :)

Oh, and congrats with the new toys! I can't even imagine how you managed to defret one the very same day it arrived. Kudos!

Wow! Sounds great, that. Is the point to augment volume and push away the wood so the frets get looser when cold again? Or am I on a different planet here?

Funny how we're different, eh? My new Ray 5 has made me doubt all my four-stringers, including the Bongos with the 4-band EQ that I love so much.

If you are a “Jazz” man you need to take a look at the musicman Sterling….

Same neck as the Jazz at 1 ½” wide but the musicman sound. I have played around with Rickenbacker, fender, Gibson but always go back to my Sterling. It’s just the best bass I have ever played.

And this one again shows what blue and brown can be together. Complex, but bjoootiful.

Thinking about this: so now you have a rosewood AND maple neck, you can change the sound from warm and fuzzy to harsh and shrill by just moving your left finger slightly. Man, you own a synthesizer! ;)

unfortunately i prefer the looks of the stingray man :), would love a 70/80's stingray, but BIG CASH

I understand that it's to do with melting the adhesive so the fret wire can be extracted. Never done it myself though as I prefer my fretless basses unlined (so I've got an excuse :) )

Nice one, those basses will serve you well, and I love the Stingray I think they are the best "off the rack" bass in the world, I do fly the EBMM flag and proud to, US ray or a check out a good deal secondhand on the SBMM range quality machines to. Now go and lay that playhouse and tear that hat down :D

Played an early 80's model for years and it was rock solid, great action and after I took the pre-amp out was one of the best basses I've had.
Played a few recently and they don't seem the same company ..well they aren't.. :lol: and I hate it when the bass
feels like a block of wood in your hands. Pretty poor, IMO.
I think I might just about get on with the 5's but I have them covered with my current basses anyway
but I have always found the 2 band EQ very clumsy even way back then...so apart from a slight hankering for the 5
that ship has passed. We moved on.. have MM's..???

I think the Sub budget range is decent for the money.. but is still a poor bass overall.

I had a 79 stingray but it had been through a hard life and I ended up replacing a lot of parts on it (some of which were already not original such as the PU and pre-amp) only to finally come to the conclusion that it really wasn't me and moved it on, made a substantial loss out of the whole process. I think at the time I had an idea of having one each of the usually quoted 'classic' basses but the 'ray was getting so little use in the end I couldn't justify keeping it.
