I understand that it's to do with melting the adhesive so the fret wire can be extracted.

My '82 is awesome, I always thought I would want a 70's one over an 80's one given the choice, I had both and sold the earlier one to fund my upright bass rather than buying a cheapo upright. In an ideal world I would of kept both and bought more :yarr:

They are awesome. I've had mine for near a decade now (after a Wayne's World style "oh yes, it will be mine" moment). It's not my go-to, but that's probably because I've got it set up with uber-high action so when I'm playing in noisy rock bands I can beat the bejesus out of it.

For me it sits next to the P as the Telecaster of the bass world - you can play pretty much anything on it, its a proper workhorse. Unlike some basses, you can really lay into them without being too precious about it and they'll take it all day long. That's why I love my 'ray and my Tele - Leo had it right!

The best wooden bass I've ever played, loved my first play on one back in 85 and love 'em now. The wooden qualifier is down to my newly arrived 'Berger XL2, which is sexual graphite sustain in a sofa playable format.

I don't have the experience to tell between alnico and whatever the other material is but I do know that the Pre-EB 'rays have fantastically thin necks, very comfortable for me, and they all have an almost perfect, full punchy sound.

Perhaps they are a little more 'Marmite' than Precisions and so my thought that they will eventually replace Precisions as the standard bass will not occur, but frankly, I can't understand why, for general use, people play anything else.

I've had three all told, off loaded one to a BCer and still have the other two. Love em.

I pay this thread a visit quite often. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/25449-musicman-porn-thread/

Lots to drool over.

What is it with that Godawful scratchplate on the SR 4, did Musicman suddenly run out of imagination?
Really like my SR 5 though, which just about gets away with it... just a shame it's got one too many strings on it :( ;)
