Clarky Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 South London (Clapham): Laurence Dixon Laurence did some great work on my Kolstein bass and is a talented luthier (he made the Ray Brown DB replica for Ronny Scotts) as well as a very amiable guy. He is hard to track down though as he doesn't have a website and I had to find his details circuitously. So in case anyone in London needs his skills (especially now that Malcolm Healey is semi-retrired and moved out of the M25 - see below), here are his contact details: Laurence Dixon 78 Rectory Grove Clapham Old Town London SW4 0ED Tel 07947 377520 Surrey (Boxhill): Malcolm Healey Malcolm is (I believe) more attuned to making his own instruments these day, having semi-retired, but will still do repair/setup jobs etc Website with contact details: http://www.healeyviolins.co.uk/contact.php Quote
spencer.b Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I couldn't agree more, laurence is a lovely fella and a great luthier. Quote
Clarky Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 Hopefully all you DB-playing BCers will chip in with recommended luthiers across the UK (and further) so that this thread becomes an easy-to-consult list should anyone on BC need work doing on their DB or EUB Quote
philparker Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 (edited) Somerset/Wiltshire (Frome): Martin Penning Studio 8, The Silk Mill, Merchants Barton Saxonvale, Frome, Somerset BA11 3PT 07810 890 108 http://www.mpenning-...er/welcome.html The nearest DB Luthier to me is the venerable Martin Penning and I hope to contact him later this year to have a new bridge fitted and possibly with Fishman Full circle. Martin is based in Frome, in Somerset, but close to the Wiltshire border and should cover the 'South-West' area. For DB set-ups in the Salisbury area, I have used Nick Marchant http://www.guitarrepairsuk.com/ who, although mainly a guitar luthier, was reliable and did a good job! jakenewmanbass Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 If you can find Roger Dawson, you won't go wrong he is a master, and very reasonably priced in my experience. Last time he did work on my bass it was in Greenwich. Quote
ubassman Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Just an thought - would be a good idea to perhaps follow Clarky's format to make it easy to find Luthiers by area. Quote

TheRev Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Bristol: Bristol Violin Shop 12 Upper Maudlin Street, Bristol, BS2 8DJ http://bristol-violin-shop.co.uk/ (The website is under construction at the moment, so not a lot to see there) These guys did a fantastic job on my 60s East German ply - they sanded three dents out of the back of the neck, reshaped the neck, full fingerboard shoot and also threw in a bridge re-shape for free. Very friendly, quick and reasonable. Quote

Repaired the neck that my father kindly snapped off for me. Great job, sorted bridge, finish damage, setup soundpost and manufactured a new ebony fillet for neck join. All in price was unbelievably low, have paid same for bass setup, fret recrown and small crack repair. A great guy to chat instruments with. Edited June 5, 2013 by 3below Quote

pete.young Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 Peter Messenger ME Strings 5 Lower Byfield Monks Eleigh Ipswich IP7 7JJ www.mestrings.co.uk Peter is a violin maker and restorer and is happy to do repairs on violas cellos and basses. He reattached the back to my German 70s plywood bass, fitted a new endpin, recut the nut, repositioned the soundpost and lowered and thinned the bridge. The bass now plays better than it ever has. Turn around was really quick and the price was extremely reasonable. And he is a really nice guy. Highly recommended. Quote

Marc S Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Anyone recommend a good DB luthier in Cardiff? I just fancy a set-up, maybe lower the action a tad, and general check-over for my bass Marc Quote
