wmsheep
Hi all Right, I`m looking at buying a second hand bass at the moment (not saying what in case it falls through!!). Obviously, as it`s the best part of 20+ years old it`s going to need some work done to bring it up to scratch. As far as I can see, the 3 options are 1) Renovation; Bass is stripped down and taken back to the condition it was the day it left the factory using, wherever possible, original or original specification hardware. 2) Overhaul; Everything is checked and if it needs replacing, then new hardware installed 3) Total update; Everything that can get replaced IS replaced with brand new state of the art stuff. Any of the above would be carried out in conjunction with a full body overhaul. Anybody have any thoughts on the above? Mark
acidbass
You mentioned about replacing everything - would it not be better just to buy a new bass in that case? Definitely sounds like an ambitious project, are you going to do the whole lot yourself? If you do, keep us all updated on the Bass Porn section (or maybe there's a Build forum, not really sure with this new forum yet! )
john_the_bass
must be something special/valuable/knackered/cheap to consider doing that much work to!! sounds like fun but i can't help but feel that you could possibly save yourself a few bob? The Funk
I'd go for Option 2, with a tiny bit of Options 1 and 3 as required.
wmsheep
OK, looking at things, I think the "Total update/Replace all" option would be fairly cost prohibitive for the amount that I want to spend on the bass in the first place - to be honest it was always going to be a final option. It`s probably going to be the same for the first option too; I say probably as I`m still trying to find out about availability & cost of original parts for replacement. So, it looks like #2 is the route that I`ll be going, if anything needs to be done at all.
elom
In my (limited) experience a good set-up and a new set of strings often works wonders. Try that, see how you get on and you can always replace bits of hardware gradually over time too if you thin kit's necessary.
Veils
I persoally would only replace the stuff that needed it or if I wasn't happy with it. Keep as much of its character as possible if it has some aged bits on it
R,5,R,5...
Well, naturally it depends on the quality of the bass to begin with. A 20 year old Galveston might not warrant extravagant spending. But since you seem to be thrilled with the potential acquisition, I guess it's a good'un. Furthermore, what you do with it depends on what you want to get out of it. A playable bass? A collector's item? In most cases, I believe I would go for option 2, but as I say it will very much depend on the bass and your needs.
