richardcoughlan
Hi Looking for some advice/suggestions, I'm in the market for a replacement pickup to use in some of my p basses. Looking to get as close to early 60s, Jamerson/Pino tone. Using rosewood fretboard and old TI flats on them currently. Going through some of the major brands there seems to be loads suggesting a true representation of the vintage 60s pickups. Wondered if anyone had any experience with any of the below or could suggest others to consider? £89 Fender original pickup £130 Seymour Duncan Antiquity II £52 Seymour Duncan Vintage SPB-1 £110 Nordstrand np4 £110 Nordstrand np4v £100 Aguilar AG 4P-60 £55 Wizard Trad £90 Bareknuckle 65 split coil Thanks for the help Best, Rich
Cat Burrito
My experiences are with these 4 excellent pickups; £89 Fender original pickup - Good but I don't think modern Fender pickups are the best on the market £130 Seymour Duncan Antiquity II - by far & away the best. Expensive but amazing tone £52 Seymour Duncan Vintage SPB-1 - superior upgrade to Fender stock & classic vintage vibe £55 Wizard Trad - raved about on here but I preferred the SD range. Woody thump but less pure / classic I play rosewood necked P-basses with flats too & definitely favour old school tones
Platypus
£115 Lindy Fralin should be there
richardcoughlan
Thanks, this confirms what I was thinking. Had Antiquity IIs on a jazz bass at one time and they sounded really classic. Will have a look at the Lindy Fralin! Many thanks

I`ve had a fair few Precision pickups, and these - aside from the US Standard ones - are my fave. They just have that nasal "honk" to them that translates so well into the mix. Delberthot
The Lollar ones are Top banana as well - Bumnote has one in his Precision
hamfist
If you like some upper mids clank, don't forget the Dimarzio model P, which is a cracking pickup.
Green Alsatian
I'll throw a wildcard in there - a Wilkinson Alnico V for a pocket-busting £24.90 (not to be confused with their cheaper ceramic £14 model). As I mentioned in another thread a few weeks ago, I put a Seymour Duncan SPB-1 (a great P pickup) in a Vintage V4 p-bass that I'd wired up with CTS 250k pots and there really wasn't much between them (I couldn't tell, to be honest!) so I put the Wilkinson pickup back in there. I thought it did the 'vintage p' sound admirably. Especially with flats. Highfox
I have the AntiquityII's in my P and love em, nice woody sound, nice highs and lots of low's as you roll the tone.
dave_bass5
£115 Lindy Fralin should be there
Agreed. I've gone from a Wizard Thumper, and Fender 62 Original pup to a Fralin in my P bass, and the Fralin definitely sounds better to my ears. It's the third Fralin I've had and all have made a great difference to the basses they have been in.
ambient
I think the Fender originals are fitted to basses like the Pino custom shop models, I may be wrong though.
AttitudeCastle
The Bare Knuckle pickups are the best vintage style pickups I've ever used, bags and bags of character with modern clarity without losing that old school feel and thump. Also a fantastic company to work with, great customer service in my experience!
