Cosmo Valdemar Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I've woken up to this news. It's all over FB. I am very saddened by this, more than I expected to be - I like some if the Deftones music but was never a huge fan, but Chi always came across as such a genuine, spiritual guy, all of which was expressed perfectly buy his bass playing. Their music was certainly taken to a higher plane by his soulful lines. A unique player in the metal/rock scene, hugely talented and very humble, and someone I will always have the utmost respect for. RIP Quote
Graham Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Great tone, wonderfully expressive, effortless groove and feel; a real loss to the musical world. Though if there's a lesson here, it's alwayss wear a seatbelt Quote
AndyTravis Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Remember watching them at the Apollo years ago, and while I recall the show being less than amazing, I watched Chi and certainly felt his basslines. Was always a big fan. Shame he fought so long after the crash to not come back round fully. Quote
TomWIC Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Very saddened to hear about this, such a great bassist and inspiration to me. Quote
Truckstop Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Really really saddened by this. I've been a huge Deftones fan since I was 12 and Chi is the reason I took up bass. I just wanted to play his huge, anthemic, glorious lines. I wanted dreadlocks and I wanted a neckbeard too! Such a shame. Alex Quote
xilddx Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 This is really sad news A great player in a great band and a great guy. Quote
Chris2112 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Sad news, and a long, long fight indeed. It seems like only yesterday that I was reading news of the crash! Quote
AttitudeCastle Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Only just heard the news RIP Chi, Around The Fur was always a big record for me, great bass player! Quote
TRBboy Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Very sad news indeed, seemed like a top guy and very humble despite his talent. Chi was a huge influence on me in my early years of playing. A great loss. RIP Quote
bobbass4k Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Very saddened to hear this, especially as his condition had apparently been improving, albeit slowly. Deftones self titled record is one of my musical touchstones. Quote
Adrenochrome Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I was out all day yesterday and only just found out Quote
mike257 Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Shocked as I've followed updates on his condition and by all accounts things were improving. A sad loss, he was a wonderful musician and by all accounts a lovely guy too. He was a massive influence on me as a player and his use of space and dynamics really set him apart from a lot of other players in 'metal' bands (hesitate to call them that really). I feel for his family who must have been through such a difficult time watching him slowly improve only for this to happen. RIP Chi Quote
shizznit Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I'm really gutted to hear that Chi could not fight off his prolonged illness. I have always been a big fan of the Deftones and of Chi's playing. He was a big influence to so many. Great guy too. RIP Quote
xilddx Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 (edited)
Did he play on the latest record?
No mate. Not for the last two. Edited April 15, 2013 by xilddx Quote
