I have a Gumfert and Stodge bass banjo from around 1645. Their workshops were located in the settlement of Pilley in the New Forest where supplies of oak, sycamore, ash and horse glue were plentiful. Once the instruments were constructed, Mr Gumfert was well known for getting down on those bad boys at local fairs and taverns to the great amusment of local villagers who were just expecting music.

The instrument is heavily gigged as you might expect but retains its original varnish finish. Of note is particular wear around the tip of the headstock where the varnish has been rubbed away. Stickers from around 1830 have also been carefully removed by a qualified instrument restorer at Grabbit and Funk Ltd. Otherwise all works perfectly.
