Picked up the 8 string yesterday ...

Recommended Posts

I've hardly used it . I felt a bit wary tuning the thin strings up so high . Yesterday , I snapped the A string . I had a replacement which I cautiously put on. The reason I was wary is because I'm so used to headless bases.

I was wondering, do headless 8 strings exist?
I know 8 single string versions do .
What are your thoughts. ?

What 8-string is it?

The biggest issues with any 8-string (4 course) bass is finding room for all the tuners/machine heads, and fitting a decent bridge where there is room for individual intonation adjustment of each string in the pair. Those two things together are going to make the engineering of a headless system with pairs of strings close together challenging to say the least. I suppose the easiest way to do it would be to use conventional machine heads mounted at the end of the body along with string guides to route the strings appropriately, but that IMO negates two of the more important features of a good headless system - the lack of obstacles to the string path beyond the witness points and the fact that a good headless tuning system is generally superior to machine heads. Plus the end result will be uglier than the Warwick Nobby Meidel Bass!

Whats so scary about basses with heads anyway?
