simondee Posted May 29, 2008 Share Posted May 29, 2008 I just did a gig with a thrash band called the quarry to fill in for their bassist who's in the middle of leaving due to wifey commitments. Tons of fun but everything was tuned down to drop C# and I *really* needed a five string for it. flap flap flap. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
BTGAndy Posted May 29, 2008 Share Posted May 29, 2008 Metalhead here! Inspiration comes from Dan Briggs of Between the Buried and Me, James Leach of SikTh (R.I.P. SikTh) and Mark Palfreyman of Alarum in terms of people. In terms of bands, Pain of Salvation, Dream Theater, Opeth and Textures. Since becoming a seven string player I've started listening to guitarists a lot more. With regards to the eternal metal problem of clashing with guitarists, I'll just tell my two guitarists what I'm going to play and if they don't like it I'll turn up because I'm louder than they are! Adrenochrome Posted May 29, 2008 Share Posted May 29, 2008 Yes we play mainstream metal and rock/metal in my covers band, as well as the rock, punk, pop-rock stuff. When I was in original bands I mainly did metal, I was in a band called Final Conclusion who supported bands like Crowbar (before my time unfortunately). The band now continues as Goroka but I think they're vastly underachieving considering the ability they have. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Done a few gigs with them so far and all seems to be going fairly well... I have to say that I'm having a lot of fun playing with these guys - they're all stellar musicians and the music is suitably challenging. We're playing the Underworld on July 24th (another shameless plug) with Anchorhead (featuring Charlie from Linear Sphere) and Tesseract, who are probably going to out-prog everyone. Hopefully you'll be able to make it along to that one. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ou7shined Posted May 29, 2008 Share Posted May 29, 2008 I listen to a fair bit of metal but wouldn't use it to define my tastes coz I'm up for a broad range of toons. However all I'm listening to at the mo is Opeth, Down, Nile and Neurosis. My originals band plays a sort of evil RATM/soundgarden fusion you couldn't call it metal tho. Our Pearl Jam tribute band does what I'd consider mainstream rock (and boy do we rock) but our lead guitarist is from this lot. Fan-bleedin-tastic!
Pantera - This Love;
This is more my cuppa tea than the afore mentioned Pantera track. Josh Posted May 29, 2008 Share Posted May 29, 2008 Love it, played in thrash covers/original band for a while, got the shirts. Though I'd never do it again, maybe a few Metallica covers for kicks. In fact, I played a good amount of 'Tallica songs for the first time in 2 and a half years just the other day, it felt quite humbling actually. When I am inspried to write metal-esque stuff, I tend to draw influence from Mudvayne and Protest the Hero, seeing as the metal side of my bass-vocabulary is a good mix between the 2. Technical yet groovy and melodic. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

JoeS Posted May 29, 2008 Share Posted May 29, 2008 I do love me some metal but don't play it as much as I'd like. Most of the metal bands from round here do the KsE/Trivium thing, whereas I'm more into Tool, Isis, Neurosis, Botch, Mastodon and SikTh (amongst others). Main inspiration would probably be Jeff Caxide of Isis, although all the bands I listed have got top bass players. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
