Nice take Bilbo, thought that had some really lovely moments and was well-constructed. Really dug that double time line, need to get my DB chops up a la Christian McBridge so I can drop in a few of those!

Thanks for the feedback. I see what you mean (I think, tell me if I've misinterpreted!) about the confidence issue, sometimes I'm not completely certain of the note I'm wanting to hit. I guess intonation is a lot to do with how clearly you hear in your head what you want to play - duff notes tended to be in places in the harmony where I was less comfortable (e.g. that B7alt at the end, haven't shed my altered vocabulary that much, or that F#m7b5 to F-7 change). I certainly feel less secure at points like that, so it's interesting to hear that it filters into my intonation....

It's a simple idea: if you don't know what note you are going to play, how can you hit it on the money?

I have the same issue myself.

Ps:I couldn't do that run on a double bass

Very true, taken on board. I think I can iron that sort of thing out by working on spots in tunes where I see the harmony less clearly on the fingerboard. Out of interest, why aren't you doing the course on DB?

Will take that line down and try to work up to it - here's hoping :)

It's because recording the electric is easier; one lead vs mics, pre-amps, leads from the car etc etc. The learning is the same, whatever I play it on.

That's my best effort at taking it down - timings approximate, and tempo arbitrary!

I got marked down this week as I didn't do the peer assessments in time. It is so frustrating to always be stealing time for music instead of being able to focus on it.

Finished the last exercise. Only need to do the peer assessments and I am done. Time well spent but quite intense on top of the day job, gigs etc...

I hear you R man, it's been quite a learning insight (particularly the stuff about motivic development) which will feed into my playing over the coming months for sure with what I hope will be great benefits to the listenability of my soloing. It's also hammered home many things I suspected about what I need to crack down on in my own playing.

Still, bloody hard work getting time to hand it all in!

I think the theme and variation element is the bit that turns you from being a tech head who is learning the dots to a musician. My blues solo was a realy eye opener for me in terms of making something of value vs something that showcases a lot of bullsh*t technique.

I scored 81.1%. I lost a bit of ground because I was late with one set of peer assessment. I recommend the experience to anyone who wants to learn the basics of improvisation.

Are any more of these happening? I think I'd greatly benefit from it.

Hey Nige, I think there is another one starting in about a week - there were a few technical issues and flaws in the course material the first time around so hopefully they've sorted those now.

For those interested I scored 100%. If you have the time I think it's worth having a look at, though I found I was spending longer on doing the peer assesments than on my own submissions. It threw up some some interesting concepts along the way but the approach did seem biased toward a scalar approach to improvising - which I don't personally favour - but any opportunity to learn how one of the masters operates should never be turned down, particularly when it's free!

Ah, there seems to be the same course starting on July 19th. I'm definitely up for that https://www.coursera...e/improvisation

I've just signed up for it! How exciting.

Yep - signed up as well.

I assume its the same as the previous course? I signed up for the previous one but with with births, deaths, marriages, funerals, holidays etc could not commit to the programme.
Will commit to it this time though.

This is my first time at improvising jazz lines so it's pretty basic and scrappy but I hope I can improve over the 5 weeks

How did you get on with the piano solo analysis mate? I've done the first 8 bars but it took me two hours :)

Good work on the improv soundclound, but I won't comment as that's for the peer review stuff, but it sounds good :)

I only had a little look at that to be honest.

Thanks though, I hope I'll get better.
