So i was playing bass today and i basically came up with this fun little thing to do to train my ears.

So basically,
Get your music player and put every song you own on shuffle.
1.Select one random song.
2.Then roll a dice.
3.Skip tracks x number on dice. e.g. roll a 3, skip 3 tracks.
4.No matter what that song is even if it has no bass guitar, try and play along to it. But only listen to the song once through, so don't pause or replay it.
5.Then back to stage 1.

I thought it was fun and a useful exercises. Lets here what you guys think.

Surely you may as well just put the player on shuffle and play along without looking at the upcoming tracks? Still a random assortment :)

What's the point of rolling a die if it's on shuffle?

It is good ear training though and I do this on occasion. I also like to play guitar while watching telly sometimes and play along with any incidental music, adverts, theme tunes etc...

Yes! I've done this, it's great fun and jingles stick in your head so they're easy to remember and learn form memory.

I once set myself the task of learning an album a week, that was fun! I should probably pick that up again sometime.

But you're only playing along to music you like. Back in the 1980s (I know, I'm old :P ) I used to put on my bass, a pair of headphones and listen to the Radio 1 chart show on a Sunday. Played along to most of the songs and that's what made me such a bad player these days. :D That really was shuffle.

Include them, it'll be more challenging. :)
