gstirrat Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Just came across this guy on YouTube. He's got one of the fattest punchy tones I've ever heard. Looks like he's got a pretty chuncky soapbar for the pickup. Does anybody have any idea what bass he's playing, or any guesses as to what the Pickup or Preamp must be? Here he is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRdRSNQdWMM&list=UUnFlD8ZtEAbxRL95jRSuDVA&index=1 Quote

Roland Rock Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 (edited) Tobias Growler? Edit, I concur with WC :-) Edited April 20, 2013 by Roland Rock Quote
Rumple Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Nice tone indeed and some great playing. How bendy is that blokes thumb though!!! Quote
gstirrat Posted April 20, 2013 Author Posted April 20, 2013 Aye, It's ridiculously bendy! Maybe that's his secret. . . Cheers for the quick response! Not too familiar with Tobias, but it's time for me to swat up on their basses! Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 I like a nice Tobias, never heard a bad one live Quote
Highfox Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Bendy thumb! Maybe it is the secret weapon Made me feel a bit ill tbh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwdH9D0p6w4 Quote
BigRedX Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 I'd say the biggest factor in the punch will be the compressor he's got in the signal chain to allow him to sound even over the track he's playing along with. Quote

[/quote] Yes, looks like one of the Gibson era Growler models...variable in quality but the good ones are great. The market isn't flooded with them but they can be picked up for £6-800. I played on in strung out guitars in Glasgow a couple of years ago....very nice! Quote
hamfist Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 (edited) Gorgeous tone. THere's some heavy duty post processing going on with it though, including some serious compression. Edited April 20, 2013 by hamfist Quote
gstirrat Posted April 20, 2013 Author Posted April 20, 2013 Aye - It certainly is. Would a MusicMan give just as punchy a sound? Quote
chris_b Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 A couple of my fav bassists playing Tobias basses. Nick Daniels https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37DJR1GYp24 Reggie Mc Bride https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miWRrzMqX5M Quote

NJE Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Firstly that thumb needs looking at by a doctor, its not right at all, he's hyperextending it and will probably get really bad problems in later life. Apart from that, awesome playing and the sound is superb. The growler had a MM pickup in basically so a Stingray should get very close to that, to be honest my old Stingray 5 sounded very similar to that.....god I miss it. Quote
JamesBass Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Bloody hell what is with that thumb!? That can't be healthy! There is a LOT of production on his tracks, sounds like a good amount of compressor and some smart EQing to me! Quote

ZenBasses Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Amazing playing and tone... On his thumb.. My partner has a similar gift... Hers is double jointed... Probably the same thing going on here.. Quote
AndyTravis Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 My thumbs both are. Should I worry? Joke. Quote

Not sure that it confers any advantage that can't be achieved through a change of technique or practise for the rest of us folks... Quote
ZenBasses Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 My partner doesn't play bass. Lol... Maybe I cam persuade her to try.. Though thinking about I really don't think his thumb has any bearing on his playing... It's all in the fingers and in this case heavy use of studio equipment. But you can't knock a great tone.. Which is what it is.. .. Quote
Lfalex v1.1 Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Nor mine, but if she did, she'd have some fine kit to use! And that's probably true of most of us. Double-jointed or not Can you imagine the arguments? "No! I want the Alembic tonight!"... Quote
paulbass Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 This guy is a top bassist. To get that punchy tone he uses a tc electronic impact twin, which is an interface that you plug into when recording. They are great bits of kit and they sell for around £250. Hope this answers your question. Quote
