Damn that XR18/IEM set up looks good. I really like the power strip idea and want to do the same myself. Was this purchased as a unit or did you make it up yourself? If purchased could you please share the detais so I can look into making a puchase or if made details of the components used and where they came from. Do you have photos of the rear? Don't want much do I

Made up myself.

The bottom strip consists of:

Neutrik DBA-BL - blanking plates
Neutrik NC3FD-LX B - Chassis mount female XLR
Neutrik NAC3MPA-1 - Powercon Socket
M3 Nylon bolts and M3 Screws (socket head)
Neutik SCDR boot - for Powercon Socket rear

I had the 6 hole D type rack panel hanging around, not sure what it is but there's something very similar here - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PSG03788-Rack-Panel-1U-6-D-Type-PRO-SIGNAL-/191500430568?

You'll need to solder and heat shrink some flying cables (I use VanDamme star quad cable) to the rear of the XLRs on the panel mount mount and put a NC3MXX male XLR connector on each end. Theres a length of cable ties going across the width of the rack in order to attach the cables to avoid stress in the solder joints during transit. On this particular case, Road Ready 6u effects case, from bax shop, there's a handy rail to tie such things onto. Also on these same internal rails, I've mounted a psu from abcproducts (eBay) to get rid of the wall wart plug. From the Powercon, the power is split between the Behringer and this PSU to provide power to the IEMs.

The top panel is simply a 1u blanking strip. Try to get a u shaped one instead of a flat one as there is less flex in the u shaped ones.

You could get away with a 4u case if you wanted the same if you are prepared to drill the XR18 rack ears, which I know a few people have done. You could drill a hole for each of the leads going straight to the inears unit. In which case, I would suggest a cable passing straight through with a gromet in the rack ear where you have drilled to prevent cable rub. The power would of course, take a thicker drill bit and some precision drilling to line up the holes for the M3 bolt.

The owner of this case is not too sure if he wants to add stuff to the rack, hence the choice of 6u - gives options down the line.

There is nothing mounting on the back yet as there is no need to even take off the back. It's planned to be just placed on the back lid and the top is removed as in the photo and everything is available from there. To be fair the case is fairly deep, maybe twice the depth it needs to be - but the guy I'm building it for is planning to put all his XLR cables in a bag and store it in the rear of the rack...

Hope this helps.

Fantastic - thanks Russ - done some research and some creative thinking and have hatched a plan. I think I'll go for the 4u option and start drilling - more than likely into the blanking plate of the iem transmitter (the bit that the aerial screws into). I'll procure the bits needed and get busy with the soldering iron. Rack porn photos will be posted in due course. Thanks for taking the time to give me the steer with this.

No problems. Would recommend you check this too - https://www.bax-shop...microphone-case = although check out whats going on with the foam in the lids.

It's not as deep so less wasted space inside - just check the measurements are suitable for your needs.

RoadReady cases are amongst the best cases I've used or seen, along with Amptown cases. The latter are pretty expensive though.

Drilling through the IEM plate should be easy enough. A couple of grommets and you are away. Powercon could be more tricky to drill though! Looking forward to the pics. Good luck! :)

Tonyf - we need more rack porn IEM setups in this thread! :P
Does this count? Clearly not just in ears, but still, it looks good. Belongs to a couple of mates of mine, and is essentially their entire setup.

Squints... PSM 300, LD1000...

XSW, X32, Kemper.

I like this game :-)

Pair of PSM300's, Trio of XSW wireless mics, X32 Rack, Kemper Rack, new defunct LD1000, Macbook pro, some patch pays and a Virgin Media Superhub. I think.

Mr Zed - how you getting on?

Soldering club with my best mate StingrayPete (he used to frequent these parts).

Just a note, the braided ground on Van Damme cable is a bitch to strip back! Mind you, there should be zero interference on those cables! (Maybe a bit overkill for such a short run... but hey).

Note - There's no run of cable ties across this rack - the cables from the front panel are in thick heat shrink and cable tied to the rack ears directly next to them... so figured there's not enough movement in the cable to worry about that.

That looks REALLY neat. I've had to shelve the idea for a while due to some unexpected household [s]expences[/s] opportunities coming in. I have an old 4u rack that I could use for this but i'm going to buy a new one with a smaller depth that will be neater and more compact. Looking at your power supply, it looks like you have fed both from the same powercon? Very, very impressed with what you & Pete have done here!

I think the neatness and success of these projects has more to do with Pete than me. He's a dab hand. I think it's years under classic car bonnets.

I've made up cables in the past but a single cable is more like an hours work for me! :P

Research complete - creative thinking engaged vs do I really understand electrics vs how compact can I go - culminating in a (hopefully) workable compromise! Parts on order and looking forward to getting on with this project. Never had rack gas before. Photos to be posted when I've finished fannying around with the soldering iron!

I've have been lurking this awesome thread for long, it inspired me and my band to take the IEM plunge. Stereo is mind blowing. Right now we use the budget shure universals while we wait for the next 64 audio CIEM sale.

I'm well pleased that this thread has inspired others to make the leap to the wild side of IEM!

Great looking rig and I see that you are using the Thomann Ssnake - I've been looking at them as a cheaper alternative to wiring up my Van damme looms when utilising a splitter (once in a blue moon kinda stuff). Whats the quality of them like?

sunsse - what desk you using to drive all this good stuff?

My loom - still got to sort this out at the next soldering club -

Much soldering, heatshrinking and braiding... and hopefully we'll be there!

And stereo - yes, it's a blessing!

I like these IEM posts... keep them coming. Here's some more from me. C'mon Mr Zed, join the party! Tonyf, where's the SCS funk trunk?

Here's one of my inears rigs on top of my cabs. I swear bands love me when I dep - they always ask with much excitement if I am bringing an inears rig with me! :P

Funnily enough, I was also asked to look after the QSC Touchmix (which is sitting on top of the flightcase). Brilliant little unit - super easy to use and sounds great - and reliable built in wifi for iPad mixing off stage. What's not to like?

And no, it's not overkill for a pub gig. The acoustics at the pictured venue are terrible - three foot horrible hollow stage. In-ears? Meh, no problem.

The SCS Funk Trunk! Think I'm going to make an official nameplate. :D

Needs more work. We need to rack up the mic receivers but it's finding the time. Also, the vocalists prefer to have them loose in case then need them for other projects which is fair enough,

Following EBS_Freak's advice, we're also looking at how we mount the antennas as I know the chaos drives him mad.

I use a A&H QU16 desk. I reckon you had or even still has the same desk? The cheap shure universal iems are a good match with that desk because you can equalize entire monitor channels. After i boost especially the low frequencies in the shure iems, the sound quality becomes quite decent. I'm still really looking forward to trying some quality CIEMs though.
The Thomann snake is a budget item for sure, but I think it's very good value for money. The plugs sit tight and unlocks easily when you unplug, unlike other budget XLRs i've tried before, which was a pain to unplug. I will see within the next year if it's durable enough for gigging. I hope I dont have to resolder all the time.

Not the QU16 - Im a GLD80 man - but I know the QU16 well. A mate of mine uses one and it's a perfect bit of kit for what we all want to achieve. I try to get play time on a whole load of desks so I can compare how they all perform. Currently trying to find where I can get my hands on a Soundcraft UI for a bit. The onboard looks pretty impressive... but then again, so is the Behringer stuff. I was pleasantly surprised by the QSC Touchmix... would recommend that for it's easy of use. Very straightforward and intuitive. Anyway, I digress.

CIEMs will rock your socks off - defo go for the quad for the extended bass headroom. 1964 have just changed to 64 Audio and are now embracing the Adel technology - and as a consequence, the prices have hiked significantly, so you may want to start looking at the other main brands also and see what deals they have as all the prices have pretty much levelled (with regard to driver count) across the field. Anyway, JH Audio and 1964 tend to have Black Friday deals so thats the date to keep in your calendar.

I agree - on paper, that Thomann snake is very, very competitively priced! Very interested!

As there's loads of pics being posted, lets keep up the trend... here's the GLD80!

Although I am using this more and more, primarily due to it's portability - but I do miss the comprehensive fx section of the A&H.

You need to be telling that to FunkMum™ and SoulDaddy © ;)

It would proper do my nut having those two receivers perched on top of the FunkTrunk™... mind you, mismatched receivers is causing me to break out into a sweat.
