Dave Vader
5 actually, but yea, they got Sergio Vega in and he's recorded the last 2 albums, although his creative contribution to the first one was apparently minimal, so that may actually explain Stephs switch to 8 strings, if they were jamming and writing without bass he might have wanted to round out the sound, although actually I saw a gear walkthrough where he said his switch to 7 strings was mainly for comfort, his hands are too big for 6's, so maybe not.
Oh, I know a man who can help him if his hands are too big for normal 6 string guitars..... Gust0o
Strange, as I first got into playing rock as the bass lines were - to my young eyes and ears - a lot more differentiated, and fun to play, than the Oasis covers doing the rounds at the time. bremen
And this shows my ignorance here, but when I do listen to metal, I don't here the bass line at all. Where as with any other music I can always pick it out.
You'd soon notice if it wasn't there. Especially live. I love Rammstein, me, and I can only think of 2 or 3 "interesting" bass lines in their songs, but for sure it makes a massive difference to the overall sound.
I don't think it is drowned out though. You just can't separate it from the wall of sound sometimes, by that doesn't mean you can't hear (or feel) it. I just love playing that serves the music rather than just the notes the particular instrument happens to be playing. I'd love to play bass in a metal band...or rhythm guitar in a reggae band! Gust0o
On the subject of potato bread, this is a stalwart of what I discovered was the "Ulster fry" when I was working over the water. You don't really see it back here on the mainland, and people normally chuck a hash brown in to try and make up the gap The Yanks often serve corned beef hash with their fry-ups. Shouldn't work, but bloody well does! They do make the mistake of going with Canadian bacon mind - crisp and sweet... it has a time and a place, but not in a fry

Gust0o
I saw Black Sabbath at Download last year, and Geezer was the most audible of them all on stage - no idea on his backline, but it was Lakland P-style bass in his hands. Looking forward to seeing them again this year. They've still got it - and Geezer could always put a bass line together. War Pigs is my favourite. gjones
Listening to Metallica I wonder why they don't just use an octaver (and keep it real low in the mix).
richardjmorgan
As someone who plays guitar in a metal band that lost its bass player earlier in the year and, as such, has been doing a fair bit of playing with just two guitars, drums and vocals, it makes a BIG difference. Funnily enough, it's given us a much clearer idea of exactly how we want the bass to work within the band, part of which is for it to be a lot more prominent in our overall sound. BassTractor
Is potato bread like a potato scone?
Yes, it can be. Potato bread can take many forms, and as a foreigner I guess the most widely known variant is the slices one gets with full English breakfasts in road restaurants. Tattie scones are within the realm, as are the flat varieties they sell here. Call me ignorant! best, bert
