LawrenceH
The Midget is simply too small to have a bass end that matches the mid performance of the driver without an EQ boost (but it would take it well enough if you had one at the right freq). The on-axis spike in the response that'd contribute to it sounding harsh could easily be tamed with a gentle filter, either on the amp or a passive device built in to the speaker - but that latter option would add weight (so I assume the midget doesn't have one). If you want a very smooth mid-range then a driver with less distortion in the upper-mid region would be better, but I suspect most people couldn't hear the difference on bass. If you're desperate for a new 112 with a different flavour then you could build one! Lots of very good drivers available these days, neo and ceramic, it's not very difficult putting them into a ported box. That way you can tailor it to your sound/requirements. For something different to what a Midget can achieve I'd look at Faital first for an easy solution, though there are several interesting options
JTUK
This overuse of the term 'uncloured' ..?? Everything colours the sound and the bass...not least the way you tune the cab to achieve your design goals. The notion of 'flat' on some amps is nonsense to a large degree and filters and enhancers do just that... dial in or cut a dollop of EQ. Probably..and IMO..the best amps are the big heavy output stage jobs which have pretty average EQ, but frankly, they don't need much more..if your bass sounds good. That is probably as 'flat/uncoloured' as you'll get
LawrenceH
Not really sure what's your point there? Colour = distortion, of various types, surely? Unless you're running a valve amp with high output impedance then the speaker is effectively buffered from the rest of the signal chain so a truly uncoloured speaker will faithfully reproduce the electrical signal put into it, bandwidth aside.
