SlapbassSteve Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 What's everyone make of this? I know very little about these but it looks a bit suspect to me, no pictures of headstock except by request, and a very interesting 'custom made scratchplate'..? neepheid Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Well, I've asked for the headstock piccies, see what happens. eBay stop you from sending your email address to people now, so I had to concoct a word game to get the message through. Something about it isn't right, but quite a lot of it is, so not sure. In the meantime, check out this '66 EB-0 on flyguitars.com and see what you think: http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/1966gibsonEB0.php Quote
ash Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Yes I agree it looks odd, it looks like its been stained and the pickup cover looks too large - although the pickup itself and ground plate and rout look fine. Perhaps its the angle? A bit of a mistake missing the obvious headstock picture - hmmm, curiouser and curiouser. Its not too far from me and I asked for pics too - we will see. Quote
Mr. Foxen Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 (edited)
Well, I've asked for the headstock piccies, see what happens. eBay stop you from sending your email address to people now, so I had to concoct a word game to get the message through.
Not sure if you can attach pictures both ways, but I've taken to sending a picture of my email address. Edit: looked at bass, looks like it has been sanded back fairly aggressively. Dandelion Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Looks like it has been painted with creosote. Quote
neepheid Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Well, make up your own mind: I think that it is probably real, but been completely refinished (including the headstock) at some point, hence the rather wonky attempt to redo the logos etc. Will require a lot of work. Quote
ash Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 The machineheads are correct for an early 60s as is the bridge and 'bell' truss rod cover but that nut? Quote
neepheid Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013
The machineheads are correct for an early 60s as is the bridge and 'bell' truss rod cover but that nut?
I know, but perhaps the nut was replaced. The bad stuff is easily explainable. As I said before, it's probably real, but it's had a hell of a time of it and would take a LOT of work to restore. Quote
ash Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Yes the nut is certainly a replacement. Would be a fun project at the right price - wonder whats under that massive scratchplate? Quote
SlapbassSteve Posted April 29, 2013 Author Posted April 29, 2013 Looks real having seen all that, but man that bass has had a tough life! Like Ash says, it would be a nice little project at the right price... Quote
Bassmonkey Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Yeah - was about to post this here too but beaten to it. I also asked for headstock pics and does look kosher. Bizarre guitar though. Will keep an eye on it. Lotsa work needed Quote
