Hi all I am trying to save up for a good type p bass as my thunderbird isnt really giving me the sound I want just wondered if you could tell me what you think to this http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/MTD_CRB_4_BLK.html

Hmm I dunno, that's a tough one, I like the MTD. The Friedland demo shows it has a nice even tone, like basswood does, but it also looks easier to play with perfect intonation - the individual look is a bonus. Sounds like you won't have to try before you buy either, thanks to decent quality control.

+1 Schnozzalee

I like the style of the MTD, whereas IMHO the Fender to me just looks like another generic bass; nothing new or exciting.

If you watch Ed Freidland's review of this bass he speaks well of it.

I'd think seriously about this one. Nice growl and punchy.

Sandberg Electra VS4 if you want something different? Otherwise, I'd keep an eye out for a Fender Classic 50's Precision. I bet the MTD is great though, but there do seem to be mixed reviews about the Kingston range (although if Ed rates it, it must be good!).

G&L SB-2. CLassy, individual, and Leo's best basses yet.

I'll also say that the Ed Friedland review of the MTD's is quite impressive. If you like fivers the B string on that P replica is massive. Better than any MIM Fenders I'd guess.

Thanks guys don't think i will be trying a 5 string just yet i am nowhere near close to mastering a 4 string yet and all the Fenders I have seen seem way out of my price range and from what I have seen online alot of people seem to think the MIM Fenders are poorly made I dont know if this is true? but the MTD seems to do what I want for what seems a fair price.I would like to try one really but nowhere local to me stocks them :( . Also I don't mind trying the second hand route don't really know what to go for make wise but I specifically want a P bass Im looking for that rocky twangy sound.

Don't forget that with distance selling regulations/laws, if you don't like it you can return it within a few days and get your money back. Bass Direct also get good fb from those on here who've used them. (Never done so myself though)

WRT MIM I've tried one of 2 and they've been good. But some Americans don't rate anything that's not USA made. But a MIM is USA made parts assembled in Mexico... so I've read

Before you splash the cash, cast your eye over these - value for money.

I only recently put a MIM and MIA P-bass up against each other. Both new, both rosewood fingerboards and both the same year (I think). The MIA played and sounded noticeably better. (If I'd had the money to spare, I would have bought it that afternoon, I was so enamoured with it.) But this is not to say the MIM was a bad bass, by any means; I certainly wouldn't rule one out.

I really like the look of that MTD but I can't comment on how it might sound or play. Unless there's any way you can try one out, and maybe try out a MIM Fender, I guess there's no way to find out without ordering one. It does look good though, doesn't it?
